Criminal Minds Drops Voit Twist After Secret Testimony

Voit sentenced – In the June 25 episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution, Voit’s life sentence hinges on an FBI agent’s testimony—and the BAU’s biggest shock comes from learning the hidden supporter of his rehabilitation was Garcia.
The BAU walked into the June 25 episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution expecting answers about Voit’s case. What they got instead was a revelation that didn’t just change the outcome—it cracked the team’s trust.
During the Thursday, June 25 installment of the Paramount+ series, Brian (Paul F. Tompkins) told the Behavioral Analysis Unit that an FBI agent’s testimony was what led to Voit (Zach Gilford) being sentenced to life in prison, rather than the death penalty.
The testimony itself raised the stakes. Then the real gut-punch arrived when the BAU realized one of their own had been quietly backing Voit’s rehabilitation. Until Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) finally revealed it was her, the team didn’t know.
The news landed like a slap: everyone was shocked, but Rossi (Joe Mantegna) took it the hardest. The moment created a divide amongst the BAU agents—one more fracture in a season already built around uncertainty.
Criminal Minds. which premiered in 2005. follows a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit. Across the series. the crime drama uses behavioral analysis to help locate unknown subjects. and that method is what initially guided the BAU in tracking the show’s latest threat.
That threat, in Criminal Minds: Evolution, is Voit. The revival on Paramount+ brought back much of the cast after the original series concluded in 2020, including Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster reprising their roles. Other characters—like Matthew Gray Gubler’s Reid—have appeared in cameos.
Voit was introduced as the main antagonist in the first season of Criminal Minds: Evolution. which is also referred to as season 16 of the original Criminal Minds run. Throughout that season. the BAU spent the time hunting the prolific killer linked to 62 murders and operating as the mastermind behind an online network of fellow serial killers.
But even when his villain status felt locked in, the show threw a curveball earlier this season: Voit had significant memory loss, which caused him to no longer be labeled as a psychopath. Gilford and the rest of the Criminal Minds cast have acknowledged that Voit can’t remain on the show forever.
In an interview with Us Weekly in May 2025, Zach Gilford, 44, joked about what his exit might look like. “I was supposed to leave the show a while ago and I’ve been pitching. ‘Well. I have to leave at some point. If you’re not going to kill me, we should have a spinoff,’” Gilford said. “It’s called Criminal Mind: Voit and it follows what Voit is doing when he is out in the world. Somehow he either escapes or he gets released and he is this white whale to the BAU. So Criminal Minds can keep going and having their [unsub] of the week — but they’ll always be like. ‘I wonder if Voit had something to do with this.’”.
While Gilford returned in his scene-stealing role in season 19, he said he’s focused on where Voit is now. He also talked about the challenge of playing someone so harmful while still drawing viewers in. “No matter what [role] it is, I try to make people like the character. No matter what they’re doing or how bad they are. It’s fun, especially with someone like a serial killer. Or even when I worked on Good Girls. I was a guy who cheated on his pregnant wife and I was like. ‘But I want everyone to like me. ‘” he told Us Weekly.
“The thing is just about making people likable and to draw you in.” Gilford continued. explaining how his early career shaped expectations. “I feel very. very fortunate and lucky — especially as the guy who started out as Matt [Saracen on Friday Night Lights] — the nicest guy in the world. For a long time, all anyone wanted me to do was be the nice guy. I am still kind of being the nice guy. [but] I just happen to have done bad things [on screen as Voit].”.
For the BAU, though, Thursday’s twist wasn’t about how people feel about the character. It was about betrayal that didn’t look like betrayal until it was named. By the time Garcia revealed her role in supporting Voit’s rehabilitation. the punishment in his sentence had already been set—and the team’s unity had started to splinter.
