For some residents, the Fourth of July doesn’t just mean celebrations. It can mean evacuations, explosions, and the days afterward when the air doesn’t feel quite normal.
California authorities are bracing for another round of illegal fireworks as the holiday nears—an issue already marked by serious consequences this year and in recent years. In May, authorities evacuated parts of South Los Angeles after police found truckloads of fireworks. In April. a former Yolo County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant was indicted. along with four others. on a murder charge after a deadly July 2025 fireworks explosion killed seven warehouse workers in Esparto.
The problem has also carried major financial fallout. In 2024, Los Angeles paid $21 million to resolve claims stemming from an incident three years prior in which city police blew up a South L.A. neighborhood while detonating a cache of fireworks.
Beyond the risks tied to manufacturing or storing illegal fireworks, officials point to injuries, disruption from loud blasts, potential wildfire hazards, and lingering air pollution.
Across the state, some local jurisdictions are trying a more direct tactic: paying for information. Reward programs now offer incentives for tips that lead to arrests, citations, or identifications related to illegal fireworks.
In San Luis Obispo County. the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for information that leads to the arrest or identification of people intending to sell illegal fireworks. The sheriff’s office release warned that illegal fireworks pose “a serious threat to public safety” and can lead to “fires. injuries. property damage. and significant impacts on pets. livestock. veterans. and others who may be sensitive to loud explosions.”.

Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling (805) 549-7867 through San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers. by using the free P3 Tips mobile app. or online at the Crime Stoppers website. The release also cautioned residents not to call 911 to report illegal fireworks.
In Los Angeles County, West Covina is offering $200 for people who report illegal firework use. The West Covina Police Department said callers can qualify for a reward if they notify police about fireworks being used in West Covina and the violator is detained. issued a citation. or arrested. The program does not require the tipster to be a West Covina resident. and only one reward will be provided per incident.
City employees, volunteers, officials, and contractors are not eligible for the reward. People can contact West Covina Police about the program at (626) 939-8500.
Paramount also has a reward program for tips about illegal fireworks use, with higher stakes depending on what follows. The Paramount Sheriff’s Station said tips that lead to an arrest or citation could earn rewards of $500 for tips that lead to a citation for use or possession and $1. 000 for tips that lead to an arrest for illegal sales. To qualify, people can contact the Paramount Sheriff’s Station at (562) 220-2002.
Maywood is offering up to $1,000 as well, through its Illegal Fireworks Rewards Program. A City of Maywood news release said the program offers up to $1,000 for tips that lead to a citation. To qualify, residents can contact the Code Compliance Division at (323) 562-5700 or email code@cityofmaywood.org.
The sequence is straightforward: as threats range from mass evacuations to deadly explosions, local officials are turning to rewards tied to concrete outcomes—identification, arrests, and citations—so that the holiday noise can be met not just with warnings, but with follow-through.
