Lombardi questions tampering charges over Aiyuk video

Brandon Aiyuk’s latest social-media message has prompted NFL analyst David Lombardi to ask a blunt legal question: can the Washington Commanders file tampering charges against the 49ers receiver?
It starts the way these standoffs often do now: with a video, a direct challenge, and a simple question that turns into legal pressure.
On June 25. 2026. NFL analyst David Lombardi posted on X. formerly Twitter. asking if the Washington Commanders could “file tampering charges” against 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He framed it as looking at the issue “in reverse. ” before landing on the same hard line: “Can the Commanders file tampering charges against Brandon Aiyuk?”.
This isn’t an inquiry about whether Aiyuk should be pursued as a player. Lombardi’s point is narrower and more immediate—whether Aiyuk’s own public outreach could give Washington a basis to act.
Aiyuk’s message—meant, essentially, for the 49ers—was echoed the day before. In a video highlighted Wednesday. the 28-year-old receiver said: “If I’m crazy or if I’m cappin’. tell them boys cut me today. and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow. We’ll see who’s cappin’.” The clip was presented via Ari Meirov. Ari Meirov also shared an additional version of the message from Aiyuk on Instagram: “If I’m crazy or if I’m cappin’. tell them boys cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow. We’ll see who’s cappin’.”.
For fans watching the Aiyuk-to-Washington storyline, the videos have become their own form of countdown. For the teams involved, the question is more uncomfortable: how far does public messaging go before it crosses a legal line?
There’s also the matter of where Aiyuk stands inside San Francisco. Aiyuk has made his desire to play for the Commanders clear through “many social media posts. ” and the reporting around his latest comments describes them as almost begging the 49ers to cut him. The 49ers, however, still have him under a four-year, $120 million contract.
Injuries have shaped much of the tension around his future. The last time Aiyuk played was in the 2024 season, when he suffered a significant knee injury in October 2024. That injury forced him to miss the entire 2025 season.
As the league watches whether he’ll even be able to play in 2026, the focus in the latest reporting has turned to something more immediate than his health: which team he will play for.
And while San Francisco remains the club employing him on paper, Lombardi’s timing question—tied to Aiyuk’s newest post—puts Washington’s options in the spotlight, even if the entire exchange starts with a receiver simply telling a fanbase to “see who’s cappin’.”

So if he says “cut me” they can just sue? NFL rules are so confusing.
Lombardi really went there lol. But isn’t this like, just talking on IG? I swear teams make everything legal-y when they’re mad.
Wait I thought tampering was only when the teams talk to the players directly? Like if Aiyuk is the one posting, how is that Washington’s fault. Unless the video is “for them” but idk man. Also why does it say he’ll sign tomorrow, like contracts don’t work instantly.
This is why I hate the internet part of sports. One video and suddenly lawyers are involved. I mean he literally said “cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow,” so wouldn’t that be tampering by HIM?? Or is it only tampering if another team tries to get him after that? I’m lost. And the injury stuff too… like they can’t even play him yet but everyone’s acting like it’s already over.
