Comcast $117.5 – Comcast has agreed to a $117.5 million class-action settlement over a 2023 Xfinity cybersecurity breach that exposed personal information of millions of customers. The company says it denies wrongdoing, while the settlement website opens a claim process for el

When Comcast told some Xfinity customers about a cybersecurity breach in December 2023. the message carried a stark list: usernames. passwords. contact information. dates of birth. and the last four digits of Social Security numbers. Now, the company is looking to close the legal chapter with a $117.5 million settlement.

Comcast agreed to pay $117.5 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit tied to the breach that occurred in October 2023. The lawsuit alleges that Comcast “failed to properly protect personal information” and had “inadequate data security.” Comcast has denied any wrongdoing.

The notice to customers said the personal information exposed during the breach included usernames, passwords, contact information, dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers. The settlement, according to the settlement website, is now open for claims.

The settlement is aimed at people whose personal information was accessed during the October 2023 incident. The settlement class includes consumers who were notified about the breach in December 2023.

Not every Comcast customer is automatically eligible to file a claim. Instead, the settlement terms focus on those who received a breach notification from Comcast in December 2023.

For qualifying claimants, Comcast’s settlement website describes two pathways for recovery. One option allows people to submit a claim for reimbursement of documented out-of-pocket expenses or lost time. with a maximum payment of up to $10. 000. The website also notes that this maximum is affected by the total pool of settlement money and the number of affected customers who submit claims. Valid claims for out-of-pocket losses must be filed by Aug. 14.

There is also an alternative cash option for affected consumers who would rather not document out-of-pocket losses or lost time. That option provides a $50 payment. The website says this amount is also subject to change depending on how many claimants come forward. Claims for the alternative cash payment also have to be filed by Aug. 14.

Under the timetable laid out on the settlement website, a final approval hearing is scheduled for July 7. Payments are expected to be issued after that hearing.

The path from breach notification to payout now hinges on two deadlines—Aug. 14 for claims—and a July 7 court step that still has to happen before money is distributed. For customers who received the December 2023 notice. the question now is practical: will they take the time to document losses. or choose the simpler $50 claim before the clock runs out?.

  1. They said it was in October 2023 but told us in December?? That timing feels like forever ago. Also $10,000 max is nice but good luck proving anything.

  2. Wait I thought Xfinity breaches were like fake phishing emails. If they really leaked passwords and last 4 SSN that’s insane. But Comcast denies wrongdoing so maybe it was just “accidentally” exposed by the government or something idk.

  3. The notice said usernames, passwords, DOB, and last four of SSN… like how is that not catastrophic. They’re offering a claim process now, but only if you got notified in December so if you moved or missed the email you’re screwed? I hate that part. And the part about reimbursement being capped depending on the total pool… sounds like it’ll be $5 for everyone.
