By Tuesday morning, June 16, the decision had already landed—Colton Nussmeier would not be eligible for his senior season in Texas.
The quarterback, a four-star prospect, had moved to the Denton area after an injury-shortened junior season at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. His family’s next step was playing at Ryan High School for his senior season.
But a 3-3 vote by a District Executive Committee left no room for a simple outcome. While the committee was tied. the ruling turned on the Prior Athletic Participation Form. which stated Nussmeier transferred to Denton for athletic purposes. With that finding, he was ruled ineligible for the upcoming season.
Nussmeier can appeal the ruling with the University Interscholastic League.
Before the ineligibility decision was issued, June had been packed for the younger brother of former LSU standout quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. He competed in the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles and announced his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs on June 5.
Recruiting rankings place him high even amid the uncertainty. He is ranked as the No. 200 overall prospect, the No. 12 quarterback and the No. 34 player out of Texas, according to 247Sports. Last season at Marcus High School, he completed 60% of his passes for 1,390 yards and 12 touchdowns with only one interception. He also ran the ball 45 times for 278 yards and three more touchdowns. before a knee injury ended his season after only eight games.
This is the latest high-profile case tied to Texas high school football eligibility rules. Five-star cornerback John Meredith III was also ruled ineligible after an 11-6 District Executive Committee meeting vote determined his move from Euless Trinity to Fort Worth North Crowley in January was for athletic purposes.
