The gunfire came fast, and at first the sound was easy to mistake for something mechanical.
Argentinian soccer fans in Kansas City say their Uber driver was struck by a bullet after occupants of another vehicle opened fire on their car while they were heading to Wednesday’s World Cup game against Algeria. The frightening drive was described to Argentina’s La Nación by members of the group.
One fan said in Spanish that the attackers shot at the car as they were approaching: “They shot at the Uber twice.” Another supporter recalled that the passengers initially thought the noise was a blown tire before someone realized what had happened and called police to the scene.
“The car was moving, another car came by and shot at it twice,” a fan said. “At first we thought it was a punctured tire—I didn’t see it. … He braked, and I saw his leg—the guy had a hole in it. We called the police. It was horrible.”
The group said they provided statements to officers, who then drove them to the stadium in their patrol cars.
No motive for the shooting has been reported, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
The incident has landed amid concerns about public safety in Kansas City. Last year, the city ranked fourth in the nation for violent crime rate among U.S. cities with more than 100,000 residents, according to FBI data. The atmosphere also echoes a more recent moment of local tragedy: during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship celebration in February 2025. radio host Lisa Lopez-Galvan was struck and killed by a stray bullet. and about two dozen others were wounded. though none fatally.
For the Argentina fans, the focus now is simple and immediate: a match-day trip that was supposed to be routine turned into a sudden fight for survival—followed by police statements and a hurried ride to the stadium under the weight of what they say they saw happen inside the vehicle.
