Colorado wins opener on the road behind late TD, blocked field goal

Georgia Tech and Colorado came down to a thrilling end, with the Buffaloes blocking the Yellow Jackets’ potential game-winning field goal to get the 14-13 road victory.

For a game that was mostly ordinary, the way it ended was wild.

The craziness began after Georgia Tech kicked a field goal to take a 13-7 lead with one minute and 40 seconds left. Colorado had no timeouts remaining, and after the offense struggled all day, it went 75 yards down the field in just eight plays to score, with Julian Lewis connecting with Charlie Williams for the 20-yard score with 37 seconds left.

It looked like Colorado wrapped up the win, but Georgia Tech wasn’t going to quit.

On the first play of its drive, Georgia Tech quarterback Alberto Mendoza found Dalen Penson wide open in the middle of the field, and he ran it down to the Colorado 33-yard line for a 42 yard gain. The Yellow Jackets were set up perfectly for the leg of Aidan Birr to walk it off with a winning 45-yard kick.

But the Buffaloes were ready. Boo Carter was able to rush in and get his hand on the ball to block the kick and secure a Colorado win in a wild final 70 seconds of action.
