Clover plans June 9 reopen after sudden shutdown

Clover Food Lab, which announced it was closing all 11 restaurants and its meal-box delivery operations, says it will reopen its Cambridge and Boston locations for lunch on Tuesday, June 9, after finalizing an investment deal with an unnamed, “mission-aligned”

For customers who heard Clover Food Lab was shutting down for good just last week, the change came fast. Now. the vegetarian restaurant chain says two of its locations will reopen for lunch on Tuesday. June 9—less than a month after it announced it would close all 11 restaurants and end its meal-box delivery operations.

CEO Julia Wrin Piper said the company will reopen its Cambridge and Boston locations on June 9 after securing an investment deal late last week. Wrin Piper told Boston.com the decision follows a period of searching for a buyer that began in March but found no takers.

The chain’s Clover Food Lab in Boston’s Prudential Center—among the locations that closed last week—will be reopened on June 9. Before the shutdown, Clover also had restaurants in Sudbury, Burlington, Westford, and Somerville.

Wrin Piper said Clover is focusing on shrinking its footprint to concentrate on “core communities” in Boston and Cambridge. “The operational plan is still being worked out,” she said.

She declined to identify the investor or disclose further details about the deal. In an email announcing the reopening, Clover described the investor as “mission-aligned” with the brand and motivated by the “differentiation of [Clover’s] locally-sourced menu.”

Clover’s return is also tied to the response from customers after the closure announcement. Wrin Piper said the company saw an “outpouring of love” in the form of increased traffic and sales as supporters flocked to restaurants during the final days. The company also received messages from customers sharing memories and expressing appreciation for the brand.

In notes shared with Boston.com. customers called Clover “irreplaceable” and a “unique Boston institution.” One customer described the restaurant’s atmosphere as “welcoming. delicious. passionate. sustainable. and community oriented. ” adding that Clover staff were “always friendly and helpful.” The customer said they estimated they had at least 2. 000 Clover sandwiches over 17 years.

Wrin Piper said the reaction was deeply meaningful. “It’s meaningful to see a customer really enjoy a sandwich or really connect with a story that we’re telling about a local farm. ” she said. “It’s exciting if you see one customer doing it. If you see literally 1,000 customers do it over the course of a day, it’s incredibly meaningful.”.

Clover was founded in 2008 at MIT as a food truck, and its reputation grew around vegetarian meals made with ingredients sourced from local farms. What began with a single truck expanded into a regional fast-casual chain and meal-box delivery service.

The company had already been through a major financial collapse. In 2023, Clover filed for bankruptcy protection, citing rising costs, slow sales, and difficulty raising capital. It later emerged from bankruptcy the following year with two fewer restaurants and 240 employees.

Inflation was cited as one of the factors behind Clover’s May 26 announcement that it would close all 11 restaurants and its meal-box delivery operations. Wrin Piper acknowledged that those pressures have not disappeared. but she said the company’s restructuring is intended to put Clover on firmer ground.

“Our restaurant portfolio, as a whole, was profitable,” Wrin Piper said. “But because we were challenged with some of these pressures. it’s very important in this next iteration to really focus on the core stores that are not only profitable but also very economically service as a tight community around Boston and Cambridge.”.

While the long-term operating plan is still being finalized. Wrin Piper said it will include reducing the number of stores and scaling back on infrastructure built for expansion. Clover currently operates a large commissary in East Cambridge. where ingredients from local farmers are processed and prepared for restaurants throughout the system. Wrin Piper said the model was built to support “scaled growth” and is no longer what the company needs.

“Right now, it’s important that we’re focused on a reduced store portfolio,” she said. “We’ll be closing or downsizing our commissary, because it’s simply too big for our needs.”

Clover also faces competition from other healthy lifestyle chains that have expanded in the region, including Life Alive, CAVA, and Sweetgreen. Still, Wrin Piper said she believes Clover’s locally sourced identity and menu will remain a differentiator.

“I think providing super fresh, exciting food with really warm and inviting customer service is the way that we’re going to continue to raise sales,” she said.

Wrin Piper said many customers choose Clover specifically because its sourcing “stays 100 percent the same. ” even as the company navigates operational challenges. She added that reinvesting in the local agriculture economy is central to Clover’s mission. and she pledged continued sourcing from nearby New England farms.

“[Sourcing is] never something we’ve compromised on,” Wrin Piper said. “We will keep our commitment to sourcing from local farms in New England that you can drive to within a few hours.”

  1. I swear I saw they were done done last week. Now June 9 lunch again?? Sounds like they already had funding lined up and just panic closed for a sec.

  2. “Mission-aligned investor” is the most vague thing ever. Like who is it, some vegan billionaire? Also they said no buyers in March but suddenly boom, deal late last week… ok sure.

  3. I don’t even know what this means. They said meal-box delivery is ending, but then reopening two spots for lunch? So do I still get the boxes or not? And why Cambridge and Boston only—are they just mad at the suburbs or something. I’m just confused because I literally told my friend they were shutting down permanently.
