Bruce Springsteen. who credited Davis with changing his life when he signed him to Columbia Records at 22. wrote on Instagram: “Over here on E Street. we mourn the death of the great record man and close friend Clive Davis. At 22 years old, he changed my life when he signed me to Columbia Records. He treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success. A great man. All our prayers and love.”.
Barry Manilow, whose 1974 hit “Mandy” Davis helped bring to him, said their relationship went beyond contracts. In a statement shared with USA TODAY. Manilow said. “My heart is heavy with the loss of my friend Clive Davis. For fifty years we worked together, created together, argued together, and celebrated together. Yes, some would say it was business. But to Clive, it never was. It was family. And I was honored to be a part of his. Thank you Clive. I wish we could do it all again.”.
Carlos Santana also described Davis as a believer. saying Davis “could hear the intangible before anyone else could see it.” In a statement shared with USA TODAY. Santana added. “He believed in Santana from the beginning. and years later he believed in us again. That kind of faith is a beautiful blessing, and I will always be grateful.”.
Alicia Keys, who signed with Arista Records in 1998 under Davis’ helm, remembered the creative freedom he gave her. Taking to Instagram, Keys wrote: “To Clive Davis, the visionary who transformed dreams into reality, leaving an indelible mark on music and live worldwide.”
Her tribute echoed a theme that runs through many of Davis’ relationships: artists didn’t just see him as a gatekeeper, they saw him as an advocate for their voice.
Davis’ death comes with the weight of a career that shaped multiple eras and genres. He is remembered for championing stars including Whitney Houston, Carly Simon, Earth, Wind & Fire and more.
He was also closely tied to Santana’s comeback. Santana’s 1999 album “Supernatural” featured collaborations with Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Eric Clapton and Maná—an arc Davis helped elevate after championing the artist’s return.
Davis’ final chapter began in a familiar setting for a man who spent his life around high-stakes showcases: he died at his Manhattan home.
His longtime representative, Aliza Rabinoff, said in a statement shared with USA TODAY that Davis “passed away peacefully from age-related illness” on June 22, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” Rabinoff also said Davis had recently been hospitalized for an upper respiratory infection.
The timeline of his health has been part of the public record before. Davis previously revealed that he was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy in 2021. a condition that causes temporary facial paralysis and forced him to scale back portions of his annual pre-Grammy gala. He later recovered. Aside from the upper respiratory infection and the earlier Bell’s palsy diagnosis. Davis had not publicly disclosed any other major health concerns.
The industry’s tributes also reflect the duality that surrounded Davis’ legacy: his instincts helped launch careers, but the human toll of fame and addiction remained beyond any executive’s control.
Davis is perhaps best known for discovering Whitney Houston and shaping her early career. Despite their close relationship, Davis wrote in his 2013 memoir, “The Soundtrack of My Life,” that he was unable to steer the singer away from drug addiction that ultimately contributed to her death.
For those who worked with him, it was the faith he placed in artists—especially early on—that defined his presence.
Keys recalled how Davis championed her early in her career, telling People in 2016, “I’ll never forget meeting Clive. I remember him being really appreciative and celebratory of the fact that I was my own artist. And I remember feeling so inspired. He knew that if people could lay their eyes on me. if they could see what he saw. then they would see what he saw.”.
Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead credited Davis with offering guidance that helped shape the band’s work. In remarks shared with USA TODAY in 2022. Weir said. “He wanted us to at least be aware of the fact that you’re gonna say what you’re gonna say. but the presentation is going to dictate how people listen to it. He was older than us, so we had to take his advice seriously. He knows art when he hears it.”.
Davis, for his part, described his own motivation through work ethic and standards. In 2022. told to USA TODAY shortly before his 90th birthday. he said. “Everybody faces challenges. but the importance of the work ethic. of keeping the bar up there for the standard of excellence – I feel that was very much a part of my life.” He also said. “I found. by accident. a role for music in my life that became a natural part of me and I realized I had a natural gift for discovering artists.”.
