Clive Davis’ cause of death confirmed weeks after hospital

Clive Davis’ longtime representative confirmed his death in a statement, saying the music mogul died peacefully from age-related illness weeks after he was hospitalized for an upper respiratory infection.

Clive Davis died at 94 at his New York City home, and weeks after he was hospitalized for an upper respiratory infection, his cause of death has now been confirmed.

His longtime representative. Aliza Rabinoff. said in a statement that the music titan “passed away peacefully from age-related illness … surrounded by his family and loved ones.” The confirmation comes after Rabinoff told a major U.S. publication about his death, following the earlier hospitalization.

Davis, one of the most influential record executives in modern music, was 94 and had been diagnosed in 2021 with Bell’s palsy—a form of temporary facial paralysis. That diagnosis forced him to postpone a portion of his annual Pre-Grammy gala, which that year was held via Zoom.

Outside of the early-June upper respiratory infection that led to the hospitalization and the 2021 Bell’s palsy diagnosis from which he recovered, Davis had not publicly faced any other serious health issues.

His death landed as tributes poured in for a man whose instincts shaped careers that became cultural landmarks. As the former head of Columbia Records. Davis spent years unearthing talent that would later break out as major artists including Janis Joplin. Santana. Bruce Springsteen. Billy Joel. Chicago. Pink Floyd. Earth. Wind & Fire. and Aerosmith.

In 1979, Davis helped shepherd Aretha Franklin’s career, and in 1983 he identified Whitney Houston’s talent. Through the 1980s and 1990s, he also lifted a range of other acts—Thompson Twins, Taylor Dayne, and Ace of Base among them—before expanding the Arista Records empire.

In the late 1980s, Davis enlisted L.A. Reid and Babyface to form the subsidiary LaFace Records. a label with a roster that included TLC. Toni Braxton. Usher. OutKast. and Pink. In the mid-1990s. he partnered with Diddy—then known as Sean “Puffy” Combs—to create Bad Boy Records. which helped launch the careers of Notorious B.I.G. Faith Evans. and Combs.

Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the same year he left Arista and founded J Records. From there, he went on to ignite the careers of Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson, and—through a joint venture with Octone Records—Maroon 5.

Even as he aged, Davis remained deeply involved in selecting performers for his annual Pre-Grammy Gala. Days before that show. he could be found at the Beverly Hills Hotel in California. in his bungalow. poring over comments for the event and speaking about the newcomers he had chosen to perform alongside legends.

In 2024, Davis described his connection to the industry in a way that reflected how personally invested he remained. “It’s not a matter of that I still want to be part of [the industry], I just am. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

The sequence of facts now leaves a clearer picture of what came before: an upper respiratory infection that led to hospitalization in early June, a history of Bell’s palsy in 2021 that he recovered from, and—by Rabinoff’s account—an eventual passing from age-related illness.

For fans and industry insiders. what makes the timing sharper is that Davis was still preparing for one of music’s biggest nights days before the gala—while his health news had already been circulating in the background through the hospitalization. When the statement landed. it offered both closure and the kind of finality families don’t always get with celebrity deaths.

  1. Wait upper respiratory infection then weeks later they confirm it like it was some mystery? I feel like the hospital should’ve known right away. Also Bell’s palsy sounds scary, but they said he recovered??

  2. My mom had Bell’s palsy and it totally messed with her face so I don’t buy the “age-related illness” part like it was just random. Could that infection have triggered something worse and they’re just smoothing it over?

  3. Honestly I’m more focused on the Zoom Pre-Grammy thing. Like the fact they had to do it that year makes me wonder if he was already declining then. Also “passed away peacefully” is always said, but nobody knows what peaceful means. RIP Clive though, his taste was wild.
