Staios: Tkachuk trade was pointed at Panthers

For months, the NHL offseason has offered plenty of movement—but the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers have pulled off the biggest swing so far.

The Senators traded their captain Brady Tkachuk to the Panthers in a deal that sent back multiple draft picks. while not including any NHL-ready players. For Ottawa. it’s a decisive end to Tkachuk’s time with the club as more than a team cornerstone; for Florida. it’s the next step in what has already become a standout run built around elite forward talent and ruthless timing.

The storyline matters just as much as the roster changes. Tkachuk. selected by Ottawa in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft. now heads to play with his brother Matthew Tkachuk. Florida has benefited from that family connection before—Matthew helped the Panthers reach the Stanley Cup Final three straight years. winning twice. after Florida acquired him from Calgary in 2022.

Senators general manager Steve Staios didn’t treat the trade like a vague inevitability. In comments shared via Bruce Garrioch on X, formerly known as Twitter, Staios said Tkachuk had more than one team on his trade list—but that the final direction became clear.

“It was clearly pointed at one team at the end,” Staios said. “I feel comfortable with the return given the circumstances.”

That “comfortable” line isn’t just a sound bite for Ottawa supporters who have spent the offseason bracing for the worst. Staios also directly addressed the frustration around the kind of return the Senators received—draft picks without NHL-ready players—by insisting the organization is still focused on building and improving.

In a statement, delivered in connection with Chris Johnston of The Athletic, Staios said Ottawa did what it felt was best for the long-term health of the team.

“This was not a decision we took lightly, but ultimately we did what we felt was best for the long-term future of our hockey club,” Staios said. “We now possess cap space and draft capital and will be actively working to improve our roster.”

Brady Tkachuk’s production gives weight to why the Senators’ move carried such emotional pressure. So far in his NHL career, he has 213 goals and 250 assists in 572 games — all of them played with Ottawa. That detail is what makes the trade land differently for fans who watched him become a defining presence rather than a passing chapter.

The flip side is that Ottawa’s management is signaling the rebuild pieces are finally in place: cap room. draft resources. and the insistence that the club’s next steps can come with more control than last season’s situation allowed. Staios’ comments framed the trade as both deliberate and oriented toward a specific end point—while the Panthers’ choice of moment keeps the pressure on Florida’s title aspirations.
