Clippers weigh cap moves as Kawhi Leonard trade talk swirls

Clippers salary-cap – With trade buzz around Kawhi Leonard and salary-cap flexibility becoming a central question, the Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly looking at a more active approach in unrestricted free agency—while also shopping for trade options and managing next offseason

For the Los Angeles Clippers, the next few days could feel less like waiting and more like choosing—especially with Kawhi Leonard’s future increasingly tied to the team’s cap math.

The Los Angeles club has been told. at least in reporting. that it “could choose to be quite active in unrestricted free agency if they opt to function as a team with salary-cap space.” That possibility arrives as Leonard. a seven-time All-Star. draws more attention amid trade speculation. His $50.3 million salary is at the center of the conversation. with shedding it potentially creating spending flexibility depending on what comes back.

One of the names connected to that hypothetical opening is veteran forward John Collins. Fischer and Stein reported a reunion is “on the table,” with the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers also among the teams that could pursue him.

Before that, there was already a separate free-agent thread tied to Peyton Watson. An earlier report from The Stein Line pointed to Los Angeles’ interest in restricted free agent Peyton Watson if the Clippers can create the cap room necessary to make a competitive offer.

Still, free agency may not be the only lever. On the trade front, Los Angeles tried—then came up short—in an attempt to engage the Magic on a deal for center Goga Bitadze. Fischer and Stein said the Magic are “bracing for the loss of Moritz Wagner,” which is leading them to put a premium on Bitadze.

Underneath all the roster maneuvering is a quieter pressure that can’t be ignored: keeping the books clean for next offseason. The Clippers already have six players signed for 2027-28, while Jordan Miller and Kobe Sanders are restricted free agents. Their cap space is on pace to be in the nine figures. and that position could shape what they’re willing to do—whether that’s chasing specific names in free agency or setting themselves up to move again through a blockbuster deal.

Even if the Clippers can’t land a splashy free-agent target. the reporting suggests they may still have the tools to be aggressive in trades. For a long time. the organization was committed to Leonard and Paul George’s timeline because it had no alternative pathway. Now, it can pivot to a younger roster led by Darius Garland and first-round pick Keaton Wagler.

That direction doesn’t erase the possibility of speeding things up later. But for this summer, the emphasis in the reporting is clear: the focus is probably on 2027 and beyond, not just the short-term shuffle of names.

If the Clippers do end up clearing space through Leonard-related outcomes. the next question becomes who they choose to bring in—and how much they’re willing to risk before the bigger payroll reality of next offseason. For now, the speculation is swirling. The decisions, according to the way the pieces are lining up, could arrive quickly.
