Katharine McPhee jokes: marriage thrives after seven years

Katharine McPhee marked her seventh wedding anniversary with David Foster in late June, posting playful updates from their London trip—where she joked they “still like each other… most days,” and shared how a dessert cake typo turned “7 year itch” into “7 year

Katharine McPhee didn’t treat her seventh wedding anniversary like a quiet milestone. In London, with David Foster beside her, the House Bunny actress turned the moment into a string of jokes—because, seven years into their marriage, she clearly believes humor is part of the deal.

Late June, during their trip to London together, McPhee posted to Instagram Stories to mark the anniversary. She shared a video from their London wedding on June 28, 2019, overlaying the footage with the caption: “Happy 7 year itch baby!”

Then came dinner—and a reminder that the affection is real, even when she’s keeping it light. Along with a picture from their anniversary dinner date, McPhee wrote, “We still like each other. Most days.”

The posts didn’t stop at words. She also showed off a special dessert cake that was meant to say “Congratulations 7 year itch” but ended up saying “Congratulations 7 year each.” McPhee captioned the photo with a simple fix attempt: “7 year ‘each’ lost in translation!”

The relationship behind those punchlines has its own timeline. Foster and McPhee first met in 2006, when McPhee was an American Idol contestant and Foster was a guest coach. They didn’t officially start dating until 2017, and they tied the knot less than two years later.

The couple share one son, Rennie Foster, who is 5 years old and was born in 2021.

McPhee is now 42. Foster is 76, and their marriage includes a 35-year age gap—so noticeable that McPhee’s own posts have played with the reality of who’s older in their family. She and Foster posed on the streets of London, and she captioned the photo, “Rennie’s parents 7 years later.”

That age difference also intersects with Foster’s previous marriages. Before marrying McPhee, Foster had been married four times: to B.J. Cook from 1972 to 1981, to Rebecca Dyer from 1982 to 1986, to Linda Thompson from 1991 to 2005, and to Yolanda Hadid from 2011 to 2017. Those relationships meant Foster already had five children before he married his fifth wife.

His children are Allison Jones, 54; Amy S. Foster, 51; Sara Foster, 43; Erin Foster, 40; and Jordan Foster, 37. McPhee, meanwhile, has been married before—she was previously married to Nick Cokas between 2008 and 2016—and she doesn’t have children from any previous relationships.

The family dynamic hasn’t been without attention, either. Foster and McPhee’s age gap has been a constant talking point, including because three of Foster’s children are older than McPhee. But Sara Foster has described the situation differently—less like a headline and more like a daily reality.

Speaking to Kristin Cavallari on her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast recently. Sara said. “It’s not easy coming into this family. It’s not easy, and I think they’ve gotten so much, not s***, but the age difference. Everyone has an opinion about something. They’re 12 years in, and they are happy. … She’s a fully consenting lady, this is not, like, some child bride. She is in her 40s” (via Us Weekly).

In London. with the wedding video from June 28. 2019 and a cake mishap turned into a punchline. McPhee’s message seemed to be the same as the one Sara described: the opinions don’t change what’s happening at home—especially when the couple’s seventh year together starts with “Happy 7 year itch” and ends with a joke about “each.”.
