Clippers tear up Kawhi era, rebuild roster quickly

Clippers move – The Los Angeles Clippers completed their Kawhi Leonard exit on Tuesday, June 30, trading the longtime star to the Toronto Raptors in a deal that reshapes the team’s near-term window. With a new, younger direction taking shape, L.A. now faces a familiar challen
Kawhi Leonard’s return to Toronto didn’t happen with a quiet goodbye from Los Angeles. It happened on Tuesday, June 30, when the Clippers officially sent the seven-year star back across the country, ending an era built on one shared belief: a title was within reach.
Leonard doesn’t just change a roster spot—he changes the timetable. The move puts an end to the Clippers’ pursuit of an NBA championship “for the near future. ” as the team pivots toward youth and fresh assets. The return package is already substantial enough to hint at how seriously L.A. is leaning into that reset: forward Brandon Ingram. guard Gradey Dick. two unprotected first-round picks (2031. 2033). two second-round picks (2030. 2033) and a 2027 first-round swap.
The Clippers’ decision effectively closes a chapter that began in July 2019. when Leonard arrived in Los Angeles alongside Paul George—an event framed as a homecoming of sorts for two Southern California natives. That partnership carried the Clippers to their first Western Conference finals appearance in 2021, but it never delivered the payoff. After the duo stalled. the Oklahoma City Thunder built a championship-winning roster following the trade. using one of those draft picks to select Jalen Williams.
The trade lands while another storyline still hangs over Leonard’s departure. An NBA investigation still lingers involving an alleged “no-show” agreement with a company. Aspiration. to funnel extra compensation to Leonard as part of a salary cap circumvention. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, Leonard, and Leonard’s uncle/advisor Dennis Robertson were allegedly involved.
With Leonard gone, the Clippers now look toward reconstructing their roster this season.
The plan for L.A.’s on-court picture starts with Ingram. He joins forward Derrick Jones Jr. and center Brook Lopez. In the backcourt, the Clippers’ starting lineup would feature Darius Garland and rookie Keaton Wagler.
The offseason moves around that foundation have already started to take shape. Lopez did have his team option picked up by the Clippers. But the team declined the options for Bogdan Bogdanovic and Nicolas Batum before free agency began.
Some of the financial commitments are also now locked in. The Clippers fully guaranteed guard Kris Dunn’s $5.68 million contract for the 2026-27 NBA season. Jordan Miller received a qualifying offer. Kobe Sanders agreed to a new four-year, $11.2 million deal to return.
Bench minutes could shift again depending on who remains. Bennedict Mathurin is expected to serve as the Clippers’ sixth man after L.A. extended a qualifying offer earlier this week. Mathurin averaged 17.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 54 games last season.
The work isn’t limited to internal decisions. The Clippers still have roster spots to fill, and the options stretch across several potential targets. Re-signing forward John Collins is on the board; he averaged 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 69 games last season. DeMar DeRozan could be considered as a veteran target as the team reassesses its needs; he averaged 18.4 points and 4.1 assists in 77 games played for the Sacramento Kings. Another possibility is Mitchell Robinson. if he doesn’t return to the New York Knicks; Robinson averaged 5.7 points and 8.8 rebounds in 60 games played.
The sequencing of L.A.’s decisions matters. Leonard’s departure, the pivot toward youth through picks and younger talent, and the already-agreed offseason contracts all move in the same direction—toward a roster that can’t rely on the old championship window.
Across the league. Toronto’s side of the trade comes with its own reminder that titles can’t be built on one move alone. The Raptors traded a couple key pieces to execute the deal for Kawhi Leonard. but kept enough of their roster intact to be considered one of the top Eastern Conference contenders heading into the 2026-27 season.
With Leonard on the team, Toronto’s roster heading into the start of the NBA free agency period is listed as:
G RJ Barrett
G Jaden Bradley**
G Immanuel Quickley
G Jamal Shead
G Garrett Temple*
G Ja’Kobe Walter
F Scottie Barnes
F Kawhi Leonard

F Jamison Battle
F Sandro Mamukelashvili*
F Jonathan Mogbo*
F/C Trayce Jackson-Davis
C Jakob Poeltl

For the Clippers, the message is clear: the Kawhi era is over. What remains is the harder part—assembling a younger roster capable of competing while an investigation tied to the player’s alleged off-court arrangements continues to linger in the background.
