When President Donald Trump posted about a “truly Historic Event. ” he wasn’t talking about a campaign stop—he was talking about a convention. Trump said Tuesday that Republicans will hold a party convention in Dallas in September. calling it the first of its kind for the GOP in a midterm election year. In a Truth Social post. he described the two-day gathering as historic. saying. “Dallas will take center stage on September 9th and 10th as we celebrate our Nation. our achievements. and our bright future. THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN!”.

The party is leaning into the spectacle at a moment when it can’t afford drift. Republicans are defending narrow majorities in the House and Senate, and Trump’s sinking approval rating has put those majorities at risk.

Texas, Trump’s spotlight state, is expected to be central to this year’s struggle over control of Congress. Multiple House battlegrounds and competitive races for Senate—and potentially for governor—are already on the map. A New York Times/Siena poll released Tuesday found a tied Senate race between Democratic state Rep. James Talarico and his Republican opponent, state Attorney General Ken Paxton. In the governor’s race, Gov. Greg Abbott holds a six-point lead over Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa.

Trump also previewed what the Dallas convention could look and feel like. On Truth Social. he wrote that at the event. attendees will hear from “hardworking Americans. ” “our Great Innovators. Entrepreneurs. Manufacturers. First Responders. and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age. ” alongside “lots of Great Entertainment.” He added. “We will also have lots of Great Entertainment — It will be a RALLY like none other!”.

The announcement follows plans Trump made late last year to hold a midterm convention. Democrats, according to the same reporting, are not planning to hold a similar event—leaving Republicans to make the case for a bigger midterm moment all on their own.
