ChatGPT turns puppy potty logs into KPI dashboards

By the time our puppy Oliver’s scribbled potty log filled pages, it didn’t feel like data—it felt like homework. Every pee, poop, walk, and accident had been tracked in handwriting day after day, the kind of notes you make because you’re trying to get ahead of a problem you can’t quite predict.

Then came the AI experiment: weeks of those handwritten puppy potty logs were fed into ChatGPT. The tool extracted the information from the notes and produced a fully formatted CSV file. From there. it moved into charting—turning those daily entries into what the couple jokingly dubbed a new breed of KPI: Key Potty Indicators.

ChatGPT didn’t just organize the records. It also produced a set of “fancy metrics. ” including ARR (Accident Reduction Rate). LTV (Longest Time Void-free). PTP (Poop-to-Pee) ratio. WAF (Weekly Accident-Free) rate. and DPV (Daily Potty Volume). The dashboard’s charts proved useful in one practical way: they made the link between accidents and how often Oliver was walked easier to see.

The most striking result came from the pattern behind the mess. The AI analysis found that accidents weren’t random. They clustered in two predictable windows: midday—roughly noon to 3 pm—and late evening—8 pm to 10 pm. Those incidents often followed meals, naps, or play sessions.

The dashboard’s clearest message landed like a simple operational rule: success came from reducing the gap between “need to go” and “opportunity to go.” Oliver’s KPI dashboard framed it as more than a training slogan—consistency beat discipline. and every accident was treated as a training opportunity. The couple’s takeaway was that Oliver was becoming increasingly forecastable based on what the logs had already shown.

A chart of puppy potty training trends captures the outcome of that process: handwritten chaos converted into measurable indicators, with timing emerging as the lever that mattered most.

  1. I don’t get it. If the puppy is having accidents at noon and at night, just take him outside more… but sure, call it KPI stuff. Also “Longest Time Void-free” sounds creepy lol.

  2. This is kinda smart but also sounds like they’re training the wrong thing. Like it says “success came from reducing the gap between need to go and opportunity to go” so you’re telling me AI can predict when the dog’s gonna poop? I feel like it’s just timing after meals, not some AI miracle.

  3. Meanwhile people are scared of ChatGPT taking jobs and this is like… converting puppy notes into charts. But I guess it’s not that different from what apps already do, right? Why do they need ARR and LTV for a dog though, like is the puppy gonna get bonuses? Also the headline makes it sound like ChatGPT is potty training the dog, but it’s really the couple… so yeah lol.
