A month after it landed on digital, Project Hail Mary is preparing for its next big step—streaming next week. But the place it’s going feels intentionally narrow.
The film won’t debut on Netflix, Hulu, or Peacock. It won’t even show up on Prime Video, despite the fact that Prime Video is owned by the same company behind the movie’s studio. Instead, Project Hail Mary will debut exclusively on MGM+ starting June 18.
For anyone who doesn’t already subscribe to MGM+, that’s disappointing. It also feels a little confusing. because the film is the kind of mainstream entertainment that usually gets chased across the biggest platforms. Yet MGM has its own logic: MGM is the company that produced and distributed the film. which stars Ryan Gosling and grossed almost $700 million worldwide.
So the decision makes a certain kind of business sense. MGM put the movie together. MGM took the gamble. If the goal is to convert good reviews and a recognizable title into new members, there’s a clear reason to lead with an exclusive home.
There’s a second layer, too. MGM is owned by Amazon, and Prime Video is Amazon’s much larger streamer. The awkward part for viewers is what exclusivity can do in practice: it pressures Prime Video customers who want to watch the movie—and who may already be paying—into paying a little more for MGM+ if they want the film in streaming form.
It also changes how the watching decision gets made. MGM+ can be accessed in the Prime app, and other viewers can reach it through their cable provider or through the MGM+ app itself.
The film’s exclusivity is almost certainly temporary, at least in spirit. In the weeks after MGM+ launches it, Project Hail Mary could naturally migrate to Prime Video. From there, it may make its way to other streamers if deals are in place.
That timeline matters because Project Hail Mary isn’t just any release. Based on a novel by Andy Weir (The Martian). it stars Ryan Gosling as a middle-school teacher with an impossible assignment. He’s forced to travel deep into space and solve a problem that could end the world. Along the way, he meets an alien named Rocky, and together the pair tries to save both their civilizations.
On paper, it’s the kind of story that sells itself—an accessible premise, strong reviews, and a cast built for wide appeal. That’s what makes the platform choice sting a little more for the people who were already planning to watch it in their existing subscriptions.
