Charles Barkley urges LeBron to return to Cleveland

Charles Barkley says LeBron James’ “only smart and logical choice” is to return to Cleveland, arguing Los Angeles isn’t competitive and that LeBron should not stay in L.A. for off-the-court reasons.

LeBron James still hasn’t made his next-move call, and Charles Barkley used the silence to press one clear point: come back to Cleveland.

James. 41. had said on his “Mind the Game” podcast that he would contemplate a decision. but nothing would come before he spent time with family over Memorial Day weekend. In mid-May. he described where his thinking stood. saying. “Obviously. I understand that I’m a free agent and I can control my own destiny … but like. I haven’t even really got to that point.” He added. “I haven’t even taken my family vacation yet. … That’s kind of the thing at the forefront of my mind.”.

That weekend has passed without a public decision, leaving the NBA community waiting. Barkley’s comments came as the clock on free agency starts to matter more for the Lakers and for how other teams position themselves.

On ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday, June 5, Barkley was asked about James’ future. “LeBron only has one play and that’s to go back to Cleveland,” he said. “That’s his only smart and logical choice.”

Barkley laid out why he believes Cleveland makes more sense for James than staying in Los Angeles. He said the Cavaliers “They’ll probably be the favorites in the East or in that conversation. ” and he argued that staying in L.A. does not help James in the West. “… It doesn’t do him any good to stay in L.A. Because No. 1. they aren’t going to be competitive in the West. and also it’s time for the Lakers to turn the team over to (Luka Doncic).”.

The case for urgency got sharper after the Lakers’ season ended in the Western Conference semifinals. Los Angeles was swept 4-0 by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Barkley pointed to the gap that showed up after that outcome. saying James had glimpsed his younger self during the postseason. but it “wasn’t going to be enough without Doncic.”.

Barkley returned to competitiveness, saying, “They are not going to be competitive,” and then turned to what he believes would motivate a decision. “… If (James) stays in L.A., he is doing it for off-the-court reasons.”

He also challenged the idea of James joining other teams. “If he goes to any other teams, it would just be like him trying to win championships to catch Michael Jordan. It wouldn’t make sense. … He can’t catch Michael Jordan as a mercenary in my opinion.”

James’ résumé is built on big finals outcomes. which makes the stakes feel personal even when the conversation is about contracts and rosters. He has won four NBA championships. and he has brought at least one title to every team he has played for: Miami in 2012 and 2013. Cleveland in 2016. and Los Angeles in 2020.

Still, the timing and the uncertainty remain the story right now. With Memorial Day behind him and public quiet continuing, James’ eventual call will reshape planning across the league—especially for the Lakers, whose postseason ended the way Barkley said it did not need to keep going.

  1. LeBron to Cleveland again?? I swear every summer is the same thing. Like he’s gonna “contemplate” forever then suddenly choose, right?

  2. Cleveland being “competitive in the East” is kind of a joke though. The East is weak half the time lol. And Luka Doncic?? I thought he was on a different team, so why are they talking like the Lakers are already done.

  3. I don’t even know why people care, he’ll do whatever his agent tells him. But Charles saying “only smart and logical choice” like that’s actually true… like what about the money and endorsements? Also the article says he hasn’t made his next move call, but that sounds like he’s just been silent? Maybe Cleveland texted him first lol.
