CHICAGO — The rain fell lightly over Wrigley Field as Matt Chapman took a hanging curve into the left-center basket, turning the scoreboard against the Cubs before most of the inning had even settled. By the time the Giants were done, they’d built a 18-3 rout that left Chicago slumping again.

Chapman, a former Blue Jay, drove in eight runs and delivered his fourth career grand slam in the fourth inning. He also added a three-run shot to cap San Francisco’s seven-run sixth. finishing the game with a career-high eight RBIs after a sacrifice fly rounded out the damage. His night came on top of a blistering stretch: this was his second grand slam in two days and the sixth this season. with all six coming in San Francisco’s last 18 games.

Willy Adames and Casey Schmitt each added a pair of home runs as the Giants made it 19 losses for the Cubs in 25 games. Adames also struck early. launching a 427-foot homer in the first inning that cleared the bleachers to put San Francisco ahead 2-0. Then the Giants kept pouring it on. scoring six more in the fourth—one day after they plated six in that same frame in a 20-hit. 12-9 win at Milwaukee on Thursday.

Schmitt finished with four hits, including his second homer of the game. His team-leading 15th home run came off Chicago catcher Carson Kelly, who pitched the ninth. Jonah Cox provided a solo shot among his three hits for the Cubs.

On the mound. Giants starter Robbie Ray improved to 4-6 by allowing no runs on two hits in five innings for the win. even as he issued five walks. The Giants did most of their damage against Edward Cabrera. who returned from a blister on his right middle finger and lasted 3 2/3 innings. San Francisco scored their first eight runs on eight hits off Cabrera. then expanded the game in the middle innings. taking advantage of a 6-0 lead after Chapman’s fourth-inning slam.

In the sixth, Adames went deep for a second time to make it 13-0 before Chapman sent another homer into the night—his second of the game—pushing the rout further away.

For Chicago, Seiya Suzuki hit a solo home run. Kelly added two hits and an RBI, though he also served up the homer that helped drive Schmitt’s big night.

The Giants’ power surge has been historic in its own right: the club said it is the sixth team in MLB history to hit six slams in 20 days or less.

Saturday’s matchup is set with Giants RHP Landen Roupp (5-6, 4.22 ERA) facing Cubs RHP Ben Brown (2-2, 1.92).
