Cavill and Gyllenhaal’s ‘In the Grey’ Streams June 2

Guy Ritchie’s action thriller “In the Grey,” starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, lands on premium video on demand Tuesday, June 2, after a disappointing theatrical run that brought only $13.4 million worldwide.
A film built around two heavyweight stars and a high-stakes heist is coming to living rooms this week—after failing to catch fire in theaters.
Guy Ritchie’s action thriller “In the Grey. ” starring Henry Cavill. Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González. arrives on digital streaming Tuesday. June 2. through premium video on demand. A new listing on Prime Video confirms the date. Alongside Prime Video. the film will be available to purchase for $24.99 on platforms including Apple TV. Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV.
For viewers weighing whether to rent or buy, the math looks simpler than the movie’s plot. The film’s availability on rental is expected to follow typical pricing patterns, with rentals running $19.99 for a 48-hour period because digital rentals typically are $5 less than purchase prices.
On-screen. the story is all pressure and precision: González plays Rachel. a brilliant lawyer and high-stakes negotiator hired by her wealthy client. Bobby. portrayed by Rosamund Pike. Bobby wants $1 billion stolen from her company recovered from Manny, played by Carlos Bardem, a ruthless criminal tycoon.
Rachel can’t do it alone. To complete the job. she brings in a pair of expert extractors—Sid. played by Cavill. and Bronco. played by Gyllenhaal—along with their team of covert operatives. Manny’s position is protected by an island guarded by a private army. whose members are locked and loaded with high-tech weaponry. The film is rated R.
The streaming release lands with the film still fighting an uphill financial reality. “In the Grey” has earned only $13.4 million at the worldwide box office to date. The picture struggled early, opening with $4.1 million from 2,018 North American theaters. Through the current total, the film has $5.6 million domestically and nearly $7.8 million internationally.
Those theatrical numbers are setting up a familiar question for studio watchers: what happens after the first window fails. The film was released by independent studio Black Bear, and it premiered in theaters on May 15—less than three weeks before its PVOD arrival.
The production costs have added another layer to the disappointment. The budget is described as $70 million before marketing costs. according to World of Reel. though SlashFilm reported the budget was between $40 million and $60 million. Either way, with a worldwide total of $13.4 million, the movie is facing major losses.
Reception, too, shows a split that mirrors how people discover films now. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a 48% “rotten” critics’ score on the Tomatometer based on 52 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus says. “Pitting together charismatic stars in an underpowered caper. Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey is a slick action vehicle whose lack of fresh ideas ultimately put its entertainment value in the red.”.
Rotten Tomatoes users, however, reacted differently. The film holds an 83% “fresh” score on the Popcornmeter, based on 500-plus verified user ratings.
“In the Grey” joins the streaming wave that’s increasingly shaped by what audiences do after theaters—arriving on PVOD Tuesday, June 2, with a $24.99 purchase option and a predicted $19.99 rental price for a 48-hour period.

13.4 mil worldwide?? That’s like… not even a lot. Guess streaming will “fix” it lol.
So it’s on Prime Video June 2 and it’s $24.99 to buy? I feel like that’s kinda high for a movie that already bombed in theaters. Also “In the Grey” sounds like it’s gonna be slow.
Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal being in the same thing and it still didn’t catch fire in theaters is wild. Maybe people thought it was like the Grey movie with Liam Neeson? Idk, but I’ll probably wait til it’s like $5 rental.
Rosamund Pike wants $1 billion stolen back, right? That’s insane. Private army on an island locked and loaded… sounds like it’s basically Mission Impossible but with lawyers? I don’t even know. I just hate when they rate it R and then charge $24.99, like who’s paying that.
