By the time the cameras left Europe behind, the project was already changing shape—moving from the intensity of production into the quieter, meticulous work of post production.

“What Happens at Night” has wrapped production, and it is now entering post production after several months of filming across Europe, according to Film Updates.

The film is built around Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name. and it represents a shift for Scorsese into gothic psychological horror. The story follows an American married couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered town in Europe to adopt a baby. As complications build around the adoption process. their sense of identity and their understanding of their own lives begins to unravel.

At the center of the film is a cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who play the central couple. The ensemble also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Welker White, Ilinca Manolache, and Gabriel Spahiu.

The partnership has its own history. The project reunites Scorsese and DiCaprio, and it pairs Scorsese with Lawrence in a leading role for the first time. Development for the adaptation has stretched back for several years. Patrick Marber adapted Cameron’s novel for the screen. and later reports indicated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson contributed uncredited revisions to the screenplay.

Interest surged in 2025, when Scorsese officially came aboard as director, with DiCaprio and Lawrence attached to star. Production began in February in the Czech Republic before moving to locations in Switzerland.

During the film’s early stages, DiCaprio revealed that Scorsese pointed him toward Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” as a creative reference point—an early clue to the psychological tone the filmmakers were pursuing.

Now that principal photography is complete, attention turns to post production. No release date has been announced. Even so. “What Happens at Night” is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated upcoming projects on Scorsese’s slate. combining an acclaimed creative team with a mystery-driven psychological suspense story rooted in Cameron’s novel.
