For anyone who has ever fumbled for a wallet at the counter, the idea sounds simple: tap and go. Now Cash App is betting that it can make that moment a little more fun, too.
On June 4, Cash App launched the Cash App Wand, a pearlescent plastic magic wand with a green jewel and a keychain clip. Linked to a Cash App account, the wearable accessory is designed for tap-to-pay—used like a debit or credit card—at checkout.
Thomas Templeton. Block Hardware Lead. said in a Cash App news release that the company sees “a unique opportunity here to make payments visible and social for the first time.” He added that early testers have said they “loved carrying the wand and showing it off at checkout. ” and that Cash App believes there is “a real appetite for this among our customers.”.
The wand is the first tap-to-pay method the peer-to-peer payment platform is rolling out this year, a sign that Cash App wants to keep expanding beyond the usual card and app experience.
How the Cash App Wand works
The Cash App Wand includes a Cash App Tag. Inside, it uses near-field communication (NFC), a short-range wireless technology that allows it to securely make a payment—again, the same basic way people would tap a debit or credit card.
Cash App positions the wand as wearable, but the function is familiar: it operates like tap-to-pay financial hardware. That’s why the company emphasizes control features in the companion app.

According to Cash App’s news release, the Cash App Wand includes real-time transaction alerts and 24/7 fraud monitoring. It also can be locked and unlocked within the Cash App mobile app. Users can additionally deactivate the wand in the app at any time.
