Camry Listed in 2022 Bankruptcy Before Fatal Crash

Mackenzie Shirilla’s fatal 2022 crash involved a 2018 Toyota Camry that had been listed as an asset in her parents’ May 2022 Chapter 7 bankruptcy—months before Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were killed.

On July 31, 2022, the crash that killed Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan ended with Mackenzie Shirilla’s car striking a wall. Hours and evidence later would become courtroom facts—but the car’s paperwork trail stretches back much further.

Mackenzie Shirilla’s parents. Natalie and Steve. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in May 2022. listing $398K in assets and $173K in liabilities. In the bankruptcy documents. one of their assets was a 2018 Toyota Camry—identified as the same car later involved in Mackenzie’s fatal crash on July 31. 2022. The Camry, which reportedly had 32,000 miles, was listed at $18K.

In the criminal case that followed, Mackenzie was sentenced to life in prison for murdering Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan. Prosecutors persuaded the judge that she intentionally drove the vehicle into a wall.

Bankruptcy can be a fast-moving process for creditors, and the paperwork also shows how assets are treated: the Toyota Camry could have been sold to a third party to help pay off creditors. Instead, it appears Natalie and Steven purchased the car back as part of the bankruptcy.

Even after the sentence, Mackenzie’s parents have continued to support her and claim she is innocent.
