Camera AirPods slip to late 2027, amid AI delays

A new report says Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods are now expected in late 2027, after an earlier 2026 target was pushed back by difficulties building the AI software needed to make the visuals useful.

For a product that never had the usual kind of spotlight, Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods have been quietly moving toward the future for a long time. But the timeline is starting to show strain.

A report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple plans to launch the camera-equipped AirPods in late 2027. People close to the matter say the original plan was to launch in 2026. That earlier deadline. they say. slipped because Apple has struggled with developing the AI software required to make the concept work.

The earbuds themselves aren’t built for the simple joy of recording video. The cameras aren’t meant to take photos or capture clips. Instead. their job is to act as Siri’s eyes—giving the assistant visual context so you can ask questions about what’s around you. If you’re staring at a group of ingredients. you’d be able to ask Siri to come up with an idea for dinner.

Late 2027 is still a reported window, not a sealed date. Gurman says the timing remains fluid and could change. There’s also the possibility of an abrupt halt: earlier reporting suggested Apple could put the project on hold if it’s unhappy with the quality of the “visual intelligence” features.

Even with that uncertainty, there’s a bigger rhythm to watch. It’s believed the camera-equipped AirPods could arrive around the same time as Apple’s foldable iPhone, tying two high-profile, high-risk products to a similar rollout moment.

That connection matters because it puts the pressure where it belongs—on the software. The cameras can provide the view, but the delayed work is on turning that view into something Siri can actually understand and respond to well enough to ship.

  1. So they’re delaying AirPods with a camera… why would anyone even need that. Just my opinion.

  2. I saw this on TikTok like 2 days ago and it was already “coming 2026.” Now it’s 2027?? Apple can’t even make Siri work half the time. How’s it gonna understand my kitchen ingredients lol

  3. Wait so the camera AirPods are for Siri to watch you? That sounds creepy like it’s basically a spy device but “for convenience.” If they can’t build the AI software does that mean the camera part is fake or just will do nothing?

  4. Late 2027 is wild. I figured they’d launch with that foldable iPhone thing sooner, like Apple usually times stuff together. If they put it on hold because the “visual intelligence” isn’t good enough, that means Siri still won’t be able to answer when you ask what something is… unless you’re like in perfect lighting? Also I don’t trust Bloomberg to be accurate anyway.
