Browns QB battle: Chad Johnson backs Watson for six weeks

Chad Johnson says Deshaun Watson will be Cleveland’s starting QB, but he put a deadline on it: six weeks to meet expectations, or Shedeur Sanders takes over.
The Browns’ quarterback job still isn’t settled. It’s a familiar. high-stakes tug-of-war in Cleveland: a younger option showing flashes. and a veteran option trying to regain momentum after years of setbacks. And now, Chad Johnson has stepped into the middle of it with a warning that sounds like a timetable.
Cleveland coach Todd Monken has already admitted the team is still deliberating between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson. Sanders, the younger of the two, showed brief bursts of brilliance last season, even if the sample size was small.
Johnson framed it as Watson getting the first real opportunity. “Deshaun Watson is the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns. The job Deshaun Watson’s gonna get, it is his job to lose,” Johnson said on “Nightcap.”
Then came the condition—and the pressure that comes with it. Johnson said Watson would receive six weeks to prove the Browns are playing above or better than expectations for both the team and that quarterback. If it doesn’t happen. Johnson said Shedeur Sanders will “fall in line as the backup and be the starter for the remainder of the season.”.
“Deshaun Watson is the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns,” Johnson continued, adding: “He has six weeks. I guarantee you. Listen to me now, I’m telling, I’m calling it right now. He has six weeks to make sure that the team is playing above or better than whatever the expectations may be for that team and that quarterback. If he’s not. Shedeur Sanders will fall in line as the backup and be the starter for the remainder of the season.”.
It’s a blunt assessment, but it fits the uncertainty Monken has acknowledged. The Browns haven’t had a postseason run since making the playoffs once in the last five seasons. and the starting quarterback role has become more than a depth-chart decision—it’s become a referendum on where the franchise is headed next.
Sanders enters the debate with productivity on paper. though the numbers carry an asterisk of their own because of limited opportunity. In eight appearances last season. the 24-year-old passed for 1. 400 yards. totaled seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. and was named to the Pro Bowl as a replacement despite those meager numbers.
Watson, 30, comes with a different kind of baggage and a longer shadow. Since being traded to the Browns by the Houston Texans in 2022, he’s struggled to get back on track. He sat out last season due to an Achilles injury. and his time in Cleveland has been derailed by various ailments and legal battles over the past few years. Johnson’s point, though, was straightforward: Watson gets a defined window.
That deadline is what makes this quarterback competition feel like more than projection. The decision may still be “up for grabs” in Cleveland. but Johnson’s message is clear—Watson’s path depends on how quickly he can change the direction of expectations. and Sanders’ chance is tied to what happens in those first six weeks.
With the Browns still weighing youth versus experience, the next part of this story won’t be about who looks good in flashes—it will be about whether Watson earns the job on a fast enough timeline to keep it from being handed to Sanders.

So wait Shedeur Sanders is just gonna “take over” automatically? Lol I can’t with QB battles.
Chad Johnson always talks big but six weeks?? Like what if Watson has injuries or plays bad for one game… is Shedeur really ready right now? Sounds like the Browns are panicking.
I feel like they’re mixing up contracts and fantasy football vibes. If Watson is “starting” then why would Sanders even be in the picture like that? Also Shedeur already looked flashy once so of course they gonna hype him. Cleveland gonna Cleveland I guess.
Six weeks to meet expectations sounds unrealistic, like okay what were the expectations, top 3 in the league? And “backup and be the starter” makes it sound like they have some switch they flip. I don’t even follow the Browns that hard but this whole thing feels like they already decided and are just using Chad as a mouthpiece.
