Boston saw a sudden drop in temperatures this week. Here’s why.

Boston felt a pretty sharp bite this week, didn’t it? One minute it’s spring, the next you’re pulling a jacket back out of the closet. The cause is something we call a “backdoor front.” Usually, weather tracks west to east because of the jet stream, but these things do the exact opposite. They slide down from the coast of Maine or New Hampshire, coming right off the chilly Atlantic.

It’s almost like the weather is sneaking in the back way—hence the name. Cold, high pressure systems drive this marine air southwest. And honestly, Boston is just stuck in a tough spot geographically for this kind of thing. March and April are tricky because the ocean is still sitting in the 40s. Once those winds flip, that marine air just rolls inland like a heavy blanket. I remember stepping out onto the porch yesterday and could actually smell that damp, cold salt air before the thermometer even plummeted.

These fronts are effectively the boundary between two different worlds. Land warms up way faster than the ocean, so you end up with these wild splits where it’s 80 degrees on one side of the front and nearly 40 degrees colder just a few miles over. It makes forecasting a total headache—or, I guess, a fun challenge if you’re into that sort of thing.

Ever notice how your phone app tells you it’s going to be 80, then 24 hours later it’s suddenly calling for 50? That’s not just a glitch. The models—the Euro, the North American, all of them—really struggle to pin down exactly where that line sits. One model might be optimistic about a 70-degree day, while another is hedging for 48. It’s a constant tug-of-war between the late-winter chill and actual spring.

Eventually, the warm air will win—it always does as we push toward May and June. But right now? That backdoor front can turn a comfortable walk in shorts into something pretty miserable, pretty fast. Or maybe not miserable, just… surprising.

It’s just a reminder of the sheer variety we get here. New England weather is nothing if not impressive, even when it’s leaving you shivering on your way to grab a coffee.
