The Toronto Blue Jays were trying to regroup after a crushing 13-3 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. But Saturday’s bounce-back is coming with a key absence.

Outfielder Daulton Varsho is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against Baltimore. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. ET (12:07 p.m. PT), and Varsho is considered day-to-day with a left wrist issue, manager John Schneider told reporters ahead of first pitch.

Varsho suffered the injury during Friday’s rout, exiting the game in the fourth inning after the team reported left wrist discomfort. Before his first-inning at-bat ended, he was shaking out his left hand during a pair of swings, before grounding out.

He stayed in defensively for the time being, but when his next turn in the batting order came up again in the fourth, he was replaced by pinch-hitter Yohendrick Piñango.

Varsho then went for X-rays, which came back negative. Schneider described the situation as “just more inflammation in his wrist,” adding, “Hopefully it’s just a day or two. Just want to be careful.”

At 29 years old, Varsho has a .256/.331/.408 slash line with five home runs. He has only had one plate appearance against Baltimore so far, and that trip came before the injury.

Toronto is already missing other key parts of its lineup. Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk are both out, working their way back from injuries of their own.

With Varsho sidelined for at least Saturday and Toronto still managing multiple injury setbacks, the Blue Jays will need to absorb another lineup hit as they try to turn the page from Friday’s loss.

  1. I saw “negative X-rays” and assumed that means nothing is wrong. But then he’s still out… so what’s really going on with that wrist then?

  2. Schneider said inflammation, which sounds like the team just doesn’t wanna mess with him. Also 13-3 loss and now more injuries… Orioles really trying to injure people or what? Because that’s what it sounds like.

  3. Not surprised, that’s Toronto for you. They say “hopefully just a day or two” but then they’ve had like everyone hurt forever. Varsho, Kirk, Barger… next thing you know it’s gonna be some random dude at 3B and we’ll all pretend it’s part of the plan. I’m just confused why it’s always the left wrist too.
