With the Toronto Blue Jays trailing 6-0 to the Baltimore Orioles in the bottom of the sixth inning. 28-year-old outfielder Jesus Sanchez left the field with what appeared to be a right arm injury. The incident seemed to come from the stands: Sanchez was seen speaking toward spectators. then turning away as a baseball came down and struck his hand.

Sanchez did not stay in the game. He exited after one hit in two at-bats.

The scene immediately became tense around the seating area where the ball appeared to have been thrown. An Orioles spokesperson issued a statement shortly after, saying, “We have identified the fan and removed them from the ballpark while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

Baltimore beat reporter Jacob Calvin Meyer also relayed details from fans near where the apparent incident occurred. Those fans described it as an accident. They said Sanchez was seen holding up his glove toward a young fan as if to indicate playing catch. and that the child threw the ball after Sanchez had turned around.

Sanchez appeared to be in immediate discomfort after the incident and was seen holding onto his right hand as he walked off.

At the plate, the loss of Sanchez was a blow layered on top of an already difficult afternoon for Toronto. The first-year Blue Jay entered Sunday slashing .285/.322/.461 with 47 hits, 28 RBI and six homers over 56 games this season.
