Big 12 drops lawsuit against Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby drama

The drama surrounding former Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is slowly coming to its conclusion. After being deemed ineligible to play due to a gambling scandal, Sorsby decided to leave the school and focus on the 2027 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, his former school, Cincinnati, was cleared by the NCAA after an investigation into what the school knew about the quarterback’s gambling.

Now, a lawsuit against Texas Tech from the Big 12 is also concluding, per Pete Nakos of On3.

“A Big 12 spokesperson tells On3 the league has withdrawn its lawsuit against Texas Tech. The suit was filed to enforce rules re: Brendan Sorbsy. ‘The Big 12 Conference and Texas Tech have resolved this matter internally. We are moving ahead together as a Conference, 16 strong,’” Nakos posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The lawsuit, which was filed in June, was to enforce bylaws and sanction Texas Tech for its plan to play Sorsby. Meanwhile, the university also did not have to pay the legal fees for the conference.

“Sources tell On3 that Texas Tech did not pay the Big 12’s legal fees. The Big 12 also recently voted unanimously to adopt a new bylaw requiring the member school to bear the legal costs if a similar situation arises again,” Nakos reported.

Sorsby was initially hopeful to enter the NFL supplemental draft, but no draft was held, and he is now focused on the 2027 draft.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech started the season strong, defeating Abilene Christian 33-10. Will Hammond, who is now the starting quarterback, was dominant in the game. He went 26 of 33 for 298 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted once in the game. Hammond also threw 14 straight completions to open the game before his 15th pas of the game was picked off.
