President Donald Trump is calling for a ban on sales of Bombardier jets in the United States unless the Canada-based plane manufacturer opens a plant stateside.
“NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough!” Trump posted on Truth Social Monday. “If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank.’”
Bombardier operates several manufacturing plants in the U.S. Its Wichita, Kansas, factory produces business jets and military aircraft for special missions. A plant in Red Oak, Texas, manufactures parts for the company’s Global 8000 jet.
In addition to its factories, Bombardier has more than 2,800 U.S. based suppliers in 47 states, according to Bloomberg, and more than half the parts for its Global 7500 jets are made in the U.S., although final assembly takes place in Canada.
This is not the first time Trump has gone after Bombardier. In January, he announced he wanted to “decertify” the company’s Global Express business jets and threatened 50% import tariffs on all planes made in Canada until Canadian regulators certified aircraft from the American manufacturer Gulfstream.
Trump’s post Monday is the latest escalation in a growing trade dispute between the U.S. and Canada. Canada is imposing retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of U.S. products starting Tuesday.
