When Joe Biden walked into a room full of Democratic donors in Maryland on Saturday night, he didn’t sound like a man weighing his words. He sounded like a man annoyed—almost insulted—by what he sees as Donald Trump’s approach to the presidency.

The 83-year-old former president spent his time on one target in particular: Trump’s second-term “vanity projects,” including the remodeling of the Reflecting Pool. Biden framed the projects as a kind of personal branding carried out at public expense.

“Embarrassing for the country,” Biden said of Trump. He then moved through a series of changes to buildings and institutions. returning again and again to the theme of ego. His list included “Tearing down the East Wing of the White House making room for his ballroom. putting his name on the Kennedy Center. building an arch in his own honor. even hiring his own pool guy to fix the reflecting pool.”.

In the middle of that attack, Biden’s tone sharpened into open contempt. “Whoa! What a loser.”

Biden’s anger wasn’t just about architecture and optics. He described Trump as indifferent to what Biden portrayed as corruption and graft on a scale that, in his view, offended the basic dignity of the presidency.

“He seemed genuinely offended by the scale of open corruption and graft in Trump’s second term. ” the account of the speech says. and Biden put it plainly. “He has no shame,” Biden said. His argument went further: Trump “could care less.” Biden tied his critique to a motive—“Making money off the presidency is one of the reasons he wants to be president. ” he said.

That was the same emotional register as Biden’s broader criticism of Trump’s conduct. Biden “hasn’t waited for perspective on Trump’s second term.” He has repeatedly attacked the president’s behavior as unacceptable and un-American.

In the wake of “widespread ICE raids across the country. ” Biden also argued that the Trump administration’s push for deportations was a moral breach. He said the violent push for deportations “betrays our most basic values as Americans.” On X. he wrote: “Violence and terror have no place in the United States of America. especially when it’s our own government targeting American citizens. No single person can destroy what America stands for and believes in. not even a President. if we — all of America — stand up and speak out.”.

Biden’s Maryland remarks. delivered to donors and carried through with pointed mockery of the Reflecting Pool renovations and other high-profile projects. landed at the intersection of two overlapping messages. He attacked the vanity of the changes—down to a “pool guy” for the reflecting pool—and he insisted the real issue runs deeper: that Trump’s willingness to use the office for personal gain comes with “no shame.”.
