Mystics stun Fire in historic quadruple overtime thriller

Mystics win – Washington Mystics rallied past the Portland Fire 124-123 in a quadruple-overtime classic, the second time in WNBA history a game has reached four extra periods. With 247 total points, the matchup also set a league record for combined scoring.

For Washington, it wasn’t just another win—it was a release after losing back-to-back games to the Minnesota Lynx and the Connecticut Sun. Then came Portland and a fight that refused to end.

On Sunday, the Washington Mystics edged the Portland Fire 124-123 in a game that stretched to four overtime periods, finishing as a 4OT marathon. It marked only the second time in WNBA history that a game has required four overtime periods to decide a winner.

Sonia Citron did the heavy lifting for Washington in the most exhausting way possible. Her impact carried the Mystics through the long night, ending with a one-point finish after all the late drama and extra possessions piled up.

The sheer scoring total turned the night even louder. The Mystics–Fire game produced a combined 247 points, the most ever in WNBA history. The previous high had stood since Sept. 29, 2009, when the Phoenix Mercury beat the Indiana Fever 120-116 in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals.

By the time the final buzzer finally arrived, what lingered wasn’t only the result—it was the distance the teams had to go to get there: four overtime periods, a historic scoring pace, and a win Washington didn’t ease into after those back-to-back setbacks.
