By the time the dust settled after Canada vs. South Africa, it wasn’t the first 90 minutes that stuck with everyone in the moment—it was what happened when the game had run out of ordinary time.
The FIFA World Cup’s round of 32 officially started with the match today between Canada and South Africa. It ended scoreless through the first 90 minutes, but Canada found a goal in stoppage time to go through. The result sent Canada to the round of 16 for the first time in World Cup history.
Germany fans are also watching another major milestone from elsewhere in the tournament. Lionel Messi broke Miroslav Klose’s World Cup goals record, a development that has drawn immediate reaction from supporters in Germany.

Canada vs South Africa World Cup round of 16 round of 32 schedule Messi record Miroslav Klose Germany Paraguay France Sweden Netherlands Morocco
Messi already broke records so whatever lol. Canada still made it tho
Wait so Canada was scoreless the whole time and then just… scored at the end?? That’s crazy. Also the article says round of 32 started today? I’m confused on dates.
It says Messi broke Klose record, but I thought Klose was German so why are Germany fans “reacting” like it’s a surprise? Like Messi is supposed to do that. Canada winning feels like a fluke though if it was stoppage time.
I’m just here for the schedule part because the dates and matchups sound random like they didn’t even finish posting. Canada plays the winner of Netherlands vs Morocco right? And Germany is playing Paraguay or something? lol I can’t keep track
