Brayan Bello’s disastrous Red Sox season is showing no signs of slowing down. In Sunday’s start against the Atlanta Braves, the right-hander was chased by damage almost immediately, surrendering three runs in the first inning alone.
Bello stayed in after that rough start, but the damage piled up again. Through five innings, he allowed seven total runs. He finished with just one strikeout, while giving up three walks, two home runs, and eight hits to Atlanta. At the time of writing, the game was in a rain delay.
The numbers around his recent starts have been just as punishing. In his seven starts this season, Bello has given up 14 hits, nine earned runs and four home runs in the first inning. His ERA has risen to 7.16 on the year.
The outing comes at a time when Boston had been looking for something to click in the rotation.. Bello had been working in relief lately for the Red Sox. and the switch appeared to be producing better results than his recent starts.. He had appeared in nine total games and started seven on the campaign.
But the Red Sox are still searching for answers as injuries and uncertainty have kept their pitching staff in flux.. Garrett Crochet, listed as the team’s ace, has been hurt at some point throughout the campaign.. With a string of setbacks like that, Boston is mired in last place in the American League East.
Boston also made a change in the dugout earlier this year. Alex Cora was fired, and Chad Tracy is serving as the interim manager. Tracy is hoping to turn things around with still enough time for Boston to smooth things out.
Heading into the Atlanta game on Sunday, the Red Sox held a 19-26 record.
The pattern coming out of this stretch is stark: Bello has been hammered in the earliest portion of games, with three runs in the first inning against Atlanta, and season totals showing 14 hits, nine earned runs and four home runs in the first inning across seven starts.
