Sally Field Says Her ‘You Like Me’ Quote Misread

Sally Field is revisiting the moment that turned her 1985 Academy Awards speech into instant Oscars lore—and she’s saying the most famous lines have been misunderstood for years.
Her win came for Places in the Heart, five years after her first Oscar victory for Norma Rae.. In that acceptance speech. Field reflected on the difference between the wins. noting. “This means so much more to me this time.. I don’t know why.. I think the first time I hardly felt it because it was all so new.”
After thanking the 1984 film’s cast and her family. Field spoke through tears. saying. “But I want to say thank you to you.. I haven’t had an orthodox career, and I’ve wanted more than anything to have your respect.. The first time, I didn’t feel it, but this time, I feel it.. And I can’t deny the fact that you like me!. Right now, you like me!”
But the last two lines of that quote were later pulled out of context—frequently interpreted as a request for validation. They were also often misquoted in parodies, including a version presented as: “You like me. You really, really like me!”
Field addressed the backlash and the repeated misreadings in a recent interview with People, published on May 10.. She explained that when she won for Norma Rae the first time. she was still processing shock: “The first time I won for [Norma Rae]. it was so unexpected.. I had come out of nowhere.. So I was so numb when I won.. I don’t remember walking up on the stage.. I didn’t feel any of it. ” she said. adding that she hadn’t prepared a speech because she considered it “bad luck.”
“When I wanted to take this moment and see it and own it for myself, that for this one minute in time —maybe never again— you like me, you really like me. And that’s what I said… It became this whole [thing], but the reality is that I was talking to myself,” Field added.
Field said people who misinterpreted her 1985 Oscar speech “didn’t have a clue of what they were talking about.”
In 2022, she raised the issue again in an interview with Variety, when asked whether twisting her quote frustrated her.. Field responded. “Sometimes I want to punch them in the nose. but mostly because they don’t ever say the context of what I said before.” She said. “To me. what mattered was for that one moment in time I did it.. I did it.. I landed it, and I thanked them for feeling it.. A lot of people didn’t have a clue of what they were talking about.”
Field’s argument keeps circling back to the same point: the best-known “you like me” lines were treated like an outside message. even though she described them as something she was saying in that specific minute—after contrasting how she felt during her Norma Rae win versus her later win for Places in the Heart.
