Becky Burke fires back after pregnancy backlash

Arizona women’s basketball coach Becky Burke said hateful comments followed her social media announcement that her wife was pregnant. Burke posted again to say she won’t hide out of shame, and that she will stand up for people who can’t.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Becky Burke didn’t expect her Monday announcement to travel beyond her family’s joy.

The Arizona women’s basketball coach posted on social media that she and her wife were expecting a baby, and it quickly sparked a wave of hateful comments from people who took issue with a same-sex couple sharing the news.

Burke posted Wednesday that she and her wife had shared “the news that we are expecting a baby.” She said the announcement also brought “some of the most hateful comments we’ve ever seen.” In the post. she wrote that she and her wife knew sharing their lives publicly would come with opinions. but it was “disappointing to see so much negativity directed at what is one of the happiest moments of our lives.”.

Burke posted a photo of her with her wife, Savannah, and her son, announcing that they are expecting a daughter due in December. After the backlash, she responded with a statement under a post on X that said: “Our happiness isn’t yours to approve.”

In a follow-up post, Burke wrote: “Maybe it would have been easier to take my post down. To be ashamed.” She added that if people thought she should be ashamed, “you clearly don’t know me.”

Burke said she would not let the hatred win, writing: “I will not let hate win. I will stand up and speak for those in our community who can’t.” She emphasized that she is focused on her family. saying: “At the end of the day. this isn’t about politics or proving a point. My focus will remain where it belongs: on my growing family, our incredible support system and continuing to live authentically.”.

Burke is entering her second season as Arizona’s coach. Her first season ended with a 12-18 record. Before taking the job, she spent the previous three seasons at Buffalo.

  2. Not gonna lie, I feel bad she got backlash but also isn’t she a college coach? Like shouldn’t she keep her personal stuff off social media? Idk just seems like she invited it.

  3. “Our happiness isn’t yours to approve” honestly that’s the vibe. Some people act like being gay is some kind of scandal with the baby timing and all. Also I thought she had like, only one kid? but it says she posted with her son so I’m confused. Either way, hate comments aren’t “opinions,” they’re just gross.
