Royals’ Seth Lugo leaves vs Rangers after head hit

Seth Lugo was forced out in the fourth inning against the Texas Rangers after being hit on the head by Brandon Nimmo’s 106.6 mph line drive. Lugo left under his own power, Kansas City said he is doing well, and Mason Black took over the outing.

Kansas City’s game against the Texas Rangers turned frighteningly fast in the fourth inning, when Royals right-hander Seth Lugo was struck on the head by a line drive that came off the bat at 106.6 miles per hour.

Lugo—36 years old—was hit by Rangers outfielder Brandon Nimmo and immediately went down on the field. He did not stay down long. Lugo stood up under his own power before Kansas City’s training staff could reach the mound. a moment that brought a rare bit of relief in the middle of something that looked terrifying.

Nimmo, who played alongside Lugo as a teammate with the New York Mets from 2016 to 2022, rushed over once time was called to check on him. When Lugo left the field, there was a visible welt on his forehead. He walked off under his own power while joking with Nimmo.

Kansas City later said that “Lugo is doing well after exiting tonight’s game and will undergo the appropriate protocol and testing.”

With Lugo out, right-hander Mason Black entered in his place.

Before the injury ended his night. Lugo had been doing the job expected of him early: he finished with three hits and one run allowed. striking out two while walking one over 3.1 innings. The setback did not change the numbers he’d put up to that point. including an ERA that dropped to 3.86 over 14 starts and 79.1 innings entering the matchup.

  1. I saw the 106.6 and thought that’s like a car crash speed?? Glad he walked off but welts on the forehead is scary. Makes me think teams should wear those helmets all the time tighter or whatever.

  2. Wait so he just got hit and then was fine?? Like they’re saying ‘doing well’ but a welt means he’s good for now… sure. Also why did Black even come in if it was already over? sounds like PR wording.

  3. My cousin played ball and said that 1/100th second off the bat matters more than the speed. But the speed they said was insane. Nimmo used to be with him on the Mets right? So that’s probably why he rushed over. I just hate head shots, like helmets don’t really stop everything. Hopefully his protocol testing doesn’t take forever.
