Beckham weighs Giants return after injury reshapes needs

With Gunner Olszewski sidelined by a torn Achilles tendon, the Giants’ receiver picture has tightened again. Odell Beckham Jr. has kept the idea of a reunion alive—signing autographs at a charity event, working out with the team, and telling a newspaper he nev

On a weekend when Odell Beckham Jr. was already back in New York, the details of what he was willing to do—and what he still wants—were hard to miss.

Beckham attended Brian Burns’ charity softball game over the weekend, signing autographs for fans. He also spoke with the New York Post’s Brandon London about the possibility of returning to the New York Giants, the team he left in the first place.

“It’s a place I never wanted to leave,” Beckham said. “And it’s just a special place in my heart, just to see all of these Big Blue jerseys — just hoping for the best.”

That “hoping for the best” lands differently now, because the Giants have a renewed need at receiver. Gunner Olszewski has a torn Achilles tendon, and with that kind of injury changing everything on a roster, the receiver spot stops being theoretical and starts being urgent.

Beckham isn’t showing up as a distant rumor. He worked out for the Giants earlier this offseason, and new coach John Harbaugh didn’t shut down the idea—though he made the standard clear. Harbaugh noted it needed to be right for “both parties.”

The tension between possibility and practicality has only grown since. The Giants held a WR workout on Monday, and Beckham was one of those in attendance.

Even with Beckham around, New York moved elsewhere. The Giants agreed to a one-year deal with veteran Braxton Berrios, per ESPN. The fit is immediate on the field: Berrios is a natural replacement for Olszewski following a potential season-ending injury.

The workout day didn’t stop there. Anthony Miller and JuJu Smith-Schuster also worked out for the Giants on Monday, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

So the picture is now unmistakable: the Giants have started plugging the hole at receiver while still keeping the door open to Beckham. That matters because Beckham’s status heading into the decision is complicated. He’s 33, and he didn’t play at all in 2025 after receiving a six-game PED ban.

But when Beckham talked about what he took from that time away, the tone was more reflective than defensive. “I think you just rely on the things you always rely on, which is my faith,” Beckham said. “And. you know. God has a place of special purpose and journey for me. and just being able to spend that time away. just made me realize some things. You know, I left some things unfinished.”.

The sequence of events—Beckham attending a charity game and speaking openly about New York. working out earlier this offseason. showing up for Monday’s receiver workout. and the team continuing to add veteran options after Olszewski’s injury—puts the conversation in motion rather than leaving it stuck in headlines.

Where it ends will depend on that one requirement Harbaugh already named: it has to be right for “both parties.” For the Giants. receiver depth after a torn Achilles is the kind of problem that forces decisions quickly. For Beckham, the pitch is personal. He called New York “a place I never wanted to leave.” Now. with the roster need becoming real again. the question isn’t just whether the reunion is possible—it’s whether it’s the right move at the right time.

  1. I don’t get it, the Giants just signed Berrios right? Odell can “work out” but like… where does he fit if they already replaced Olszewski.

  2. John Harbaugh saying “both parties” makes it sound like the contract is impossible, lol. Also torn Achilles changes everything so if Odell comes back it’s gonna be like a PR move not even football. I could be wrong though.

  3. I swear every time the Giants have a problem they start talking about bringing Odell back like it’s 2019 again. The article said he was signing autographs and working out and “hoping for the best” — that’s not a plan. Meanwhile they’re out here signing other receivers like it’s normal, and then acting surprised when people get hurt. This is why I don’t trust these headlines.
