Barbra Streisand Drops Cannes Honor After Knee Injury

Barbra Streisand says a knee injury will keep her from attending the Festival de Cannes, where she was set to receive the Honorary Palme d’or for the 79th edition.
Barbra Streisand won’t make it to this year’s Festival de Cannes after all. In a statement shared Sunday, the singer and actress said she is still recovering from a knee injury and is therefore unable to attend the festival in person.
“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” Streisand said.
The Cannes appearance had been planned as part of the 79th edition. Streisand was set to receive the Honorary Palme d’or, an honor she stressed she’s still proud to accept.
“But I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition. ” she added.. Streisand also pointed to what she’d been anticipating beyond the award itself. including “spending time with colleagues whom I so admire” and “returning to France. a place I have always loved.”
While acknowledging the disappointment of missing the ceremony, Streisand sent her support to the filmmakers featured at Cannes.. “While I regret that I can’t be there in person. I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. ” she said.
“My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema,” Streisand concluded. “More to come …”
The sequence of her statement is consistent: medical advice leads to a cancellation of her attendance plans, while the Honorary Palme d’or remains the central reason she’s still connected to Cannes in spirit as the 79th edition films are celebrated.
