Avis security claim deadline set for June 21

Avis Car – Avis customers whose data was exposed in an August 2024 security incident have until June 21 to submit a claim for reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs and a possible pro rata cash payment from a settlement. The settlement website describes benefits that can t
By the time June 21 arrives, it will be too late for many Avis Car Rental customers to file paperwork that could turn a privacy scare into a settlement payout.
The claims process is tied to a class action involving an August 2024 security incident, when Avis says customer information was compromised. The settlement website puts a clear focus on what people can claim, who qualifies, and how quickly they must act.
Avis said on the settlement website that the incident involved customer names. driver’s license information. credit card numbers and expiration dates. birthdates. and phone numbers. The breach occurred from Aug. 3, 2024, to Aug. 6, 2024. Avis has denied any wrongdoing in the breach, but it is paying affected customers up to $5,000 for out-of-pocket expenses.
The deadline matters because the settlement has multiple cutoffs stacked around it: June 21 for claim submissions, and May 22 for actions that would affect a customer’s ability to stay inside the settlement.
Customers who submit a claim may receive two types of relief described on the settlement website. First, compensation for out-of-pocket loss: customers who suffered a proven monetary loss may be reimbursed up to $5,000. Second. a pro rata cash payment: all eligible customers may request a cash payment claim regardless of whether they had out-of-pocket loss. Those cash payments are described as being evenly distributed after out-of-pocket loss, notice, and administration fees are covered.
Eligibility is also tightly defined. The settlement website says Avis Car Rental customers are eligible if their private information was compromised during the security incident from Aug. 3, 2024, to Aug. 6, 2024, and if they are U.S. residents.
To claim the potential payout, eligible customers must submit a claim form online by Sunday, June 21. If submitting by mail, the claim must be postmarked no later than June 21. The online submission form is available at avisdatasecuritysettlement.com/submit-claim.
Customers still have other options, each with its own deadline. They can do nothing, which keeps them eligible to sue and not receive any money. They can also exclude themselves from the settlement. allowing them to sue Avis regarding the claims in the lawsuit; exclusions must be postmarked no later than May 22.
Those who want to contest the deal can file an objection, explaining to the court why the settlement should not be approved. Objections also must be postmarked no later than May 22.
Finally, there is a hearing for customers who plan to speak directly to the court. The final hearing is scheduled for July 28, and the settlement website says a customer would attend at the customer’s own expense.
In the middle of all the deadlines, the central dispute remains unresolved for many people affected: Avis has denied wrongdoing, even as the settlement website describes compensation for out-of-pocket losses up to $5,000 and an additional pro rata cash payment available to all eligible claimants.

June 21?? Guess I missed it already smh.
So they want you to prove your losses by June 21… but like how are you supposed to know what you lost back then? I got emails about this whole thing but I’m still confused. Also pro rata cash? Sounds like pennies for all.
They said it included credit card numbers and license info, right? But Avis denied wrongdoing so what even is the claim for? Feels like they’re just trying to close the book fast before people realize it’s real. My cousin said Avis should cover identity theft automatically but I don’t see that anywhere.
I don’t even rent cars that often but I still got some letter about it, so I assumed it was automatic. Then I read this and it’s like nah you have to submit paperwork and there are cutoff dates stacked on top of each other. May 22 affects your ability to stay in the settlement?? That’s such a weird setup. Also “pro rata” cash payment even if you didn’t have out-of-pocket loss… so it’s basically for anyone who qualifies, but only if you click the right link in time. Good luck with that.
