A global ranking that many researchers watch before planning collaborations now shows Texas taking center stage in medicine—led by UT Southwestern and Baylor as the Lone Star State spreads its footprint across the world’s top universities.
UT Southwestern Medical Center landed at No. 113 on U.S. News and World Report’s 2026-27 Best Global Universities list, the highest position among Texas institutions. Baylor College of Medicine followed close behind at No. 144, also placing near the global top 500.
The list assessed global research performance and reputation using 13 indicators and weights, and ranked the world’s 2,250 top universities.
Beyond the top two, other Texas medical and health science programs also made the global cut, but at lower positions that still signal reach in research and academic standing.
The University of Texas Health Science Center — Houston ranked No. 324, with its base in Houston and identified as a public university. The University of Texas Medical Branch — Galveston came in at No. 599, headquartered in Galveston and also listed as public.
Further down the global rankings, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center placed at No. 1,871. The institution is based in Lubbock and is listed as a public university.
Taken together. the spread of placements shows a Texas medical education landscape with clear standouts at the top. while other public institutions still earn visibility among 2. 250 global universities—an outcome that matters to researchers. prospective students. and patients who ultimately rely on the institutions doing the work.

So does this mean the doctors in Texas are automatically better now?
“Best Global Universities” sounds like marketing tbh. Like who even decides the weights for those 13 indicators? Feels rigged but okay.
I don’t get why UT Southwestern is 113 but Baylor is 144, shouldn’t the ranking be like, more close? Also UT Health Science Center Houston at 324 is still pretty good, but then Texas Tech is like 1,871 which… yikes? Maybe they’re not trying or something.
Wild that UTMB Galveston is 599, that’s actually better than I thought. I swear every time I hear these rankings it’s just about research money and not real patient care. Also “2,250” universities? Sounds like they cherry pick who to include, because there’s no way it covers everyone.
