Archie Manning ‘disappointed’ Arch was crowned before playing

Archie Manning says he was disappointed that people “crowned” his grandson Arch before he ever played full-time at Texas, even as he praised the way Arch battled through last season and finished strong. Archie pointed to the pressure that followed, especially

The crown came early, and Archie Manning didn’t like how fast it arrived.

“I was kind of disappointed in a lot of. just a lot of people. ” Archie Manning told Noah Gross of KXAN regarding the standard that was established for his grandson. Arch. prior to the start of his full-time playing career at Texas. “The whole thing. They kind of crowned Arch before he ever played. And I just didn’t think that was fair.”.

Archie acknowledged what came with that start. “Yeah, it was a little tough start, played a great team, and anyway.” But his disappointment never swallowed his pride. “I’ve never been more proud of anybody in my life with the way Arch battled through what he had to go through last year. and the way he played. you know. the last eight or nine games of the season.”.

The frustration sits alongside the reality of how football attention works when your last name carries weight. Archie’s uncles won four Super Bowls between them. One was a no-brainer first-ballot Hall of Famer. The other authored two of the most impressive Super Bowl performances in NFL history—featuring a pair of unforgettable throws as David kept Goliath from winning eight rings instead of six. (The sideline needle-threader to Mario Manningham in Super Bowl XLVI and the Houdini-level escape capped by David Tyree’s helmet catch from Super Bowl XLII are both recalled as part of that legend.).

Archie “launched the Manning dynasty” as the quarterback who was trapped on a horrible team with no way to get to a contender during a decade that featured a wide gap between football’s haves and have-nots. By the time Arch arrived, the momentum was automatic. “Everyone saw it coming for Arch,” the piece notes, even before he was playing. Before he got the chance to start, he drew far more attention than the Texas QB1. A press conference example is included: Quinn Ewers sat alone while reporters mobbed Manning.

Many believed that when Arch finally got to start, he would perform like Archie, Peyton, and Eli—“all rolled into one.” Instead, his development took time. The criticism became relentless, especially with a season-opener against an Ohio State defense stocked with 2026 first-round picks.

What makes Archie’s praise land harder is that he’s pointing at the reversal, not just the outcome. While the early stretch drew scrutiny, he is specifically proud of how Arch responded—“the way he played… the last eight or nine games of the season.”

As Arch prepares for what many believe will be his final college football season. the spotlight is set to intensify again. The piece says he could return for a fifth year in 2027. if he chooses. and that many already believe he’ll be the first overall pick in the 2027 NFL draft. That means the expectations that Archie says were unfair last time could return with even more force.

The lesson from 2025. the piece suggests. is that someone should have been working to manage preseason expectations better than they were managed for his first season. And ultimately. it points toward Texas to develop and deliver the proper messages about not expecting Arch to be a wire-to-wire superstar.

Still, the crown is hard to ignore. Archie’s words don’t erase the hype—he just refuses to accept how it was placed on Arch’s head before he played. “Heavy is the head that wears the crown. ” the piece concludes. “even if that crown came from being the MVP of the Cheez-It Bowl.” The crown prince of the Manning dynasty—at least until Marshall picks a college—still faces very high expectations. and the path to meeting them. as ever. won’t be easy.

  1. Sounds like the internet crowned him too early, but also… people do that for everyone now.

  2. Wait so Archie was mad that they said Arch was good before he played? That feels kinda dumb though, hype always comes first. Plus Texas fans were probably the ones doing it.

  3. I think it’s unfair to compare him to his uncles when he hasn’t even done the whole pro thing. But also, Manning name = instant expectations, like sorry he’s not walking out with 4 rings already.

  4. This is why I don’t like college football Twitter lol. They were saying he was the next Peyton or whatever and now it’s like Archie mad about “pressure” like he didn’t create the pressure by being a Manning. Also the article kinda jumps around? Super Bowl throws?? I’m confused what that has to do with Texas this year.
