“Break up” is the phrase she came back to as she argued that big tech firms like Apple have grown too powerful—and that Congress should use antitrust to curb them. “The problem that we have is these big problems, they think they are governments. They want to be governments,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “They want to have totally unchecked power, and I believe that we need to pursue antitrust.”.

She went further than regulation, calling for structural action. “We need to break up a lot of these companies that are far, far too big. And we also need to be instituting consumer protections,” she said.

Her remarks landed in the shadow of Apple’s recent move to raise prices on multiple products, including MacBooks and iPads. Some of the increases were as much as $500, a number that Ocasio-Cortez treated as a direct window into how everyday costs are rising even as households feel squeezed.

After Apple announced the hikes, the company’s stock took a hit almost immediately. Apple’s stock dropped from about $301 at the start of last week to $283.78 per share at the end of the week. Still, Apple remains the second most valuable company, with a market cap of $4.17 trillion.

Apple attributed the increases to demand driven by AI-related infrastructure. The company blamed the higher prices on the “rapid expansion of AI data centers” that has “created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage.” CEO Tim Cook characterized the changes as unavoidable. telling The Wall Street Journal that the hikes were “unavoidable.”.

Ocasio-Cortez pushed back at that framing. arguing that the price increases are tied to a broader system where the costs are shifted onto consumers. “Now your ability to buy laptops. computers. iPads. electronics in general is going to go up. because data centers are sucking up all of our own industrial supply. ” she said. “In a lot of ways. we are subsidizing the development of a lot of these pieces of these AI data centers.”.

Her criticism didn’t stop at Apple. She also targeted the emerging artificial intelligence companies, again without naming any in particular. “They are sitting in their private investor calls and they are so giddy about all the people they are going to put out of work,” she said.

The sequence—from Apple’s price hikes and Cook’s justification about AI data-center demand. to Ocasio-Cortez’s call for breaking up companies and strengthening consumer protections—has become a central tension in how lawmakers and industry leaders are talking past each other.
