The news landed hard for millions of viewers who grew up with Anthony Head’s face in their homes and on their screens—then watched, year after year, as his characters became part of pop culture.

Anthony Head. the actor most memorably known for his legendary role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ” died at the age of 72. In a press release shared by his daughters. Emily and Daisy Head. they said he died “of complications due to pneumonia.” The statement added that he breathed his last “peacefully. ” surrounded by family.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head. He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” the daughters’ statement read.

They also said that his life’s work—and the presence he brought to it—would remain a source of comfort. “It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege for his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many.”

“We know how dearly he will be missed by friends. colleagues. and fans of the shows he was in – he loved his job very much. and he always considered himself incredibly lucky. to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people. in such wonderful productions. across a career that spanned several decades. ” they continued.

In asking for privacy during the difficult times, the daughters said his legacy would “live on,” even as they mourn. “His legacy will live on,” they wrote, adding that his absence would be felt “in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them.”

Online, fans reacted with the kind of grief that comes when a familiar actor feels like family. On X. one user said. “Everyone better drink a cup of tea in honor of Anthony Stewart Head today 💔.” Another wrote about the coffee commercials that were everywhere during childhood. “Or coffee, his coffee commercials when I was a kid were everywhere. That’s when I first started crushing over him. Then Buffy, enough said,” they mourned. Someone else added, “yeah i can’t believe we are slowly losing the buffy gang.”.

Others remembered the Nescafe ads even before the vampire-slaying era. “The original Nescafe man. long before George Clooney. ” one heartbroken fan wrote. while another explained that. in the UK. Head rose to prominence through long-running serialized Nescafe TV commercials in the late 1980s. telling the story of a romance between him and his neighbour.

That early fame never really disappeared. Head found enormous attention in the UK during the 1980s for his role in the Nescafe commercials as the man in the Gold Blend couple—one half of the pair from 1987 to 1993 alongside Sharon Maughan.

Co-stars also took to the internet to mark his passing. James Marsters, his “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” co-star, wrote, “There’s a hole in the world. Anthony Head has passed on from us. He was an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy, and the best actor in the cast. He was the best of us. I was lucky to have known, and learned from him. He left the world a better place for his presence. Thank you Tony for all you gave.”.

Brett Goldstein, a “Ted Lasso” co-star, offered his own tribute. “Anthony Head was a brilliant actor who played the worst person in the world, which was an incredible skill because he was the best person. Infinitely charming and kind and fun and a joy. He will be sorely missed. Love to his family.”

Head’s filmography spanned decades and multiple series. He played Rupert Giles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and Rupert Mannion in “Ted Lasso.” His acting credits also included “Little Britain,” “Merlin,” and “Dominion.” In 2022, he appeared as Lord Sheffield for an episode in “Bridgerton.”

For many fans, the timing of the loss has made the grief even sharper: his death comes just six months after his longtime partner, Sarah Fisher, died in December at the age of 61.
