AMC logs 25.5 million May viewers since 2019

AMC Entertainment says more than 25.5 million guests came through its AMC Theatres in the U.S. and ODEON Cinemas internationally in May 2026—the highest-attended May since 2019—after 4.2 million moviegoers visited from May 28 to May 31. The company points to s
On a Thursday through Sunday weekend that ran from May 28 to May 31, more than 4.2 million people walked into AMC Theatres in the United States and ODEON Cinemas internationally, according to AMC Entertainment.
Just as striking for AMC is what those weekend numbers roll into: more than 25.5 million guests attended its theatres in May 2026, the company says. AMC describes it as the highest-attended month of May since 2019, both domestically and globally.
The weekend performance also fits a pattern AMC says has stretched across much of 2026. Domestic box office results, the company says, have repeatedly met—and often exceeded—expectations.
That momentum was on display again with BACKROOMS. AMC says the film opened to a media-reported $81 million domestically, becoming the sixth film in the past ten weeks to debut above $75 million domestically in its opening weekend.
Since March 20, AMC lists several other titles that opened to more than $75 million domestically in 2026: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2, MICHAEL, THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE, and PROJECT HAIL MARY.
One more detail AMC highlights from this weekend: OBSESSION actually increased its domestic box office gross from the previous weekend—and also did the same the weekend before. AMC calls that an extremely rare accomplishment for a wide theatrical release.
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron tied the May results to what he describes as a mix of established blockbusters and new IP. In his statement, Aron said that in 2026 “moviegoers have been pouring out in droves to enjoy the incomparable magic of the big screen experience that we offer in our theatres.”
He added that “with our welcoming 25.5 million guests to our theatres in May of 2026. ” AMC posted “our most highly attended May since 2019. both domestically and globally.” Aron said the results reflect “the strength of a diverse film slate. ” driven by well-known characters alongside entirely new IP.
Aron also pointed ahead to what’s coming to AMC screens in the next stretch. He said the lineup over the next five weekends includes SCARY MOVIE (June 5); MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (June 5); DISCLOSURE DAY (June 12); TOY STORY 5 (June 19); SUPERGIRL (June 26); and MINIONS & MONSTERS (July 1). along with “many other interesting titles.”.
For now, AMC directs moviegoers to get tickets through amctheatres.com and through the AMC mobile app.
The company’s release also notes that AMC is the largest movie exhibition company in the United States. the largest in Europe. and the largest throughout the world. with approximately 855 theatres and 9. 640 screens across the globe. AMC says it has pursued innovation in exhibition through its signature power-recliner seats. enhanced food and beverage choices. guest engagement via its loyalty and subscription programs. its website and mobile apps. premium large format experiences. and a wide range of content including the latest Hollywood releases and independent programming.
AMC Entertainment’s statement was released June 1, 2026.

25.5 million in May is crazy. Makes me wanna go sit in traffic to watch a movie lol.
Wait so AMC got 25.5 million guests but only 4.2 million from May 28-31? So the rest is like… May 1-27? Seems fake somehow. Also $81 million opening weekend sounds like they made up the numbers.
This is probably because people can’t stream anymore or whatever. But then it says BACKROOMS opened to $81M domestically, so I’m guessing it’s just nostalgia and marketing. I hate that I still go though, concessions are insane.
“Highest-attended May since 2019” doesn’t surprise me because everyone was cooped up and now they’re doing it again. Also I swear every other weekend they say a movie opened above $75 million like it’s automatic. Like Project Hail Mary, Super Mario… not sure how they’re tracking “guests” vs tickets though.
