In January 2027. when The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory arrives as a full-cast audio box set. it opens with a familiar kind of chaos: River Song (Alex Kingston) crashes back into Rory Williams’s life—just as he’s trying to get things straight. And the reunion isn’t just emotional for fans. It’s also the first time Kingston and Darvill appear together as River and Rory since the 2012 TV episode The Angels Take Manhattan.
The new audio adventures pick up in the gap between Doctor Who episodes The Wedding of River Song and Asylum of the Daleks. In a quartet of stories. River discovers that her parents have separated. and Rory is living with a friend in Birmingham. What they both need is some father-daughter bonding. What they get instead is pursuit—vicious enemies tracking River, turning every attempt at normal into a run for cover.
Set across busy city streets and the quieter peace of Leadworth. the storyline leans into the tension of two realities colliding. Rory’s home life is already unstable; River’s arrival makes it worse. Before long. she puts him in the middle of her lifestyle. with time and space that force them to take a leap together—whether either of them is truly ready for what follows.
The four adventures are Bog Man by Lizzie Hopley, Life Lessons by Karissa Hamilton-Bannis, A Most Dangerous Game by Robert Valentine, and The Tashpa Stone by Shai Hussain and John Dorney.
Producer David Richardson described the project as a return to the era of the Eleventh Doctor. Amy. Rory and River. calling it one of the greatest teams to have graced Doctor Who. He said the team has been trying to make it happen “for some time. ” with storylining beginning in 2020. and that River and Rory was recorded over four days in May. He framed the reunion of Alex and Arthur as a chance to “take a deep dive back into that era. ” and said the goal was to revisit their much-loved characters through new stories.
Scott Handcock. the other producer. said it’s been a thrill and pleasure to reunite Alex and Arthur on audio. adding that revisiting the period feels “incredibly special.” He pointed to the way their dynamic comes across as “effortlessly charming. ” and said the audio explores new sides of the father-daughter relationship with “monsters. assassins and time travel.”.

January 2027 is foreverrr. Also I read “Rory is tr” and thought he was like, in trouble with River? Then it said Birmingham and I’m like how does that even connect to the Daleks lol.
Wait, is River Song her dad now? I’m confused because it says father-daughter bonding like… River is the daughter? And why does it start right after Wedding of River Song? I feel like they’ll just retcon everything.
Audio box set sounds like something my cousin would buy and never play. But I mean Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill together since Angels Take Manhattan is real, right? Monsters, assassins, time travel… sure. I just hope it’s not just them talking in a studio for 4 days like that’s a plot.
