The grass-court swing gets its first real test in Den Bosch, and the very first day already carries an edge of uncertainty—especially for Bianca Andreescu.

The WTA 250 marks the start of the 2026 grass-court season, and six matches are scheduled for Day 1. Former finalist Andreescu is among the players in action, drawing a matchup with Elise Mertens in one of the day’s most intriguing meetings.

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Panna Udvardy
Alexandrova’s Den Bosch history is hard to ignore. She won the title on debut three seasons ago. and she has reached the semifinals in each of her last two visits. Her most recent memory here is more painful. Last year, she held 11 match points before falling in the semifinals to Elise Mertens.

Udvardy comes in with a different kind of momentum. This season. she has made immense progress at tour level. reaching her maiden WTA final in Bogota and establishing herself as a Top 100 player. But the heavy lifting matters: the Hungarian does most of her best work on clay. where she plays the longer points better. On grass, Alexandrova’s game carries more weight, powered by her “humongous” strength.

Prediction: Alexandrova in 2.

Magda Linette vs Kimberly Birrell
Linette and Birrell are both arriving with proof that they can upset when it counts. At the French Open, the pair delivered shock results.

The Pole beat former champion Jelena Ostapenko, while Birrell recorded the best win of her career by defeating Jessica Pegula in the first round.

Still, neither player is at her strongest on grass. The difference, though, is adaptability. Linette can adjust better when conditions get trickier, and her crisp timing off the ground should give her the edge.

Prediction: Linette in 3.

Bianca Andreescu vs Elise Mertens
Andreescu’s challenge is both timing and timing’s shadow. It has been precisely a year since Andreescu was ranked in the Top 100. and a return to the upper tier has continued to elude her. She comes into this grass-court stretch after a subpar clay-court campaign. winning two main draw matches on the dirt but failing to progress past the French Open qualifying rounds.

Mertens, meanwhile, also carries recent disappointment—but one that still feels more like a detour than a loss of direction. In Paris, she was one of the big names who fell victim to Maja Chwalinska’s crafty tennis in the early rounds. Mertens finished with a modest 5-4 record on clay.

The matchup has history. Andreescu leads their head-to-head 2-0. But Mertens has shown she can respond when pressure spikes. She won this tournament last year after saving a staggering 11 match points in the semifinals, and the Belgian is positioned to make that smoother transition to grass.

Prediction: Mertens in 3.

With the day’s matches set and Andreescu’s grass-court path underway, Den Bosch is already turning into the kind of tournament where one tight moment can change everything.

  1. Andreescu vs Mertens sounds like one of those matches that’s either gonna be amazing or boring as hell. Not sure why they’re acting like it’s “uncertain” when it’s always uncertain with grass.

  2. Wait so Mertens is the one who beat her after she had 11 match points? That’s brutal. Makes me think Andreescu won’t recover mentally, like once you blow that, it’s over… but maybe I’m wrong.

  3. Den Bosch grass swing already and they’re talking predictions like it’s set in stone. Also Alexandrova doing well on grass because she’s strong?? That’s not how I would pick a match lol. And “Top 100” doesn’t mean anything if grass favors random bounces, right?
