Achilles tear sidelines Robertson-Harris, Giants depth tests

Roy Robertson-Harris tore his Achilles during practice and will miss the 2025 season, a major hit to a Giants defensive line already thinned after trading away Dexter Lawrence.
The worry in the Giants’ defensive meetings is no longer theoretical. During practice, Roy Robertson-Harris tore his Achilles, and he’s now out for the season.
The blow lands at a brutal time for a New York group that has already been reshaped. The Giants completely shook up their defensive line when they traded away Dexter Lawrence. and the interior of the unit became a question as soon as that move became official. Robertson-Harris’ injury only sharpens that problem.
Robertson-Harris had been a centerpiece up front. He started all 17 games for the Giants in 2025, and he did it after signing a two-year, $9 million contract at the start of his second deal. Over those 17 games, he recorded 35 tackles, six quarterback hits, and a pass defended.
In the bigger view of his career, Robertson-Harris has spent nine years in the NFL, totaling 246 tackles, 73 quarterback hits, and 19 sacks. Now, with his Achilles torn, that production is gone for the season—leaving the Giants to absorb the loss while their depth is already under strain.
New York did add veterans in free agency. bringing in DJ Reader and Shelby Harris to bolster the defensive tackle room. With Robertson-Harris out of the picture. both are set to take on much greater responsibilities. and the Giants will be counting on the long NFL experience both players bring. That experience is especially important because, after the Lawrence trade, the interior had less certainty than the outside pass rush.
The Giants do have options rushing the quarterback. They drafted Arvell Reese. and they are already rostering a strong mix of pressure talent including Brian Burns. Abdul Carter. and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The issue is how much weight the unit will carry up front without Robertson-Harris contributing every week.
For head coach John Harbaugh. the assignment was already steep as he joined the Giants and began building out his first defense. With Robertson-Harris sidelined for the season. the first major test of that plan comes immediately. and it arrives in the form of a starter’s absence during practice—not a slow fade over time.
For the Giants. the immediate reality is clear: an Achilles tear removed a reliable interior presence. and it forces the defensive line to lean harder on the veterans they signed and the roles they have to expand. Without Robertson-Harris in 2025. depth isn’t just a roster issue anymore—it’s the difference between rotations holding up and the defense tightening at the seams.
