Abby Phillip challenges Katie Miller over “violent” claims

During a heated on-air exchange, CNN host Abby Phillip pushed back on Katie Miller’s claim that a Democratic Party social media insult amounted to “violent political rhetoric.” The dispute centered on an X post after White House deputy chief of staff Stephen M

For a second time in the same week, Katie Miller’s line between personal insults and political danger came under direct attack on television.

On Wednesday. Miller said on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle” that an insult on social media of her husband. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. should be understood as “violent political rhetoric.” She made the comparison while tying that style of language to what she said fueled assassination attempts on President Donald Trump. saying it matched rhetoric “leading people to shooting up. whether it be the White House Correspondents’ Dinner or President Trump in Butler.”.

Abby Phillip, speaking Thursday on CNN’s “NewsNight,” responded by narrowing the argument to the actual exchange. The “violent” post Miller pointed to came from the official X account of the Democratic Party after Stephen Miller said Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico is the “first transgender candidate.” The DNC then commented on the matter with the reply. “shut up. you ugly fuck.”.

Phillip said Miller was “throwing stones from a glass house,” arguing that Miller herself has repeatedly escalated insults online.

Phillip pointed first to what she described as Miller’s history of personal attacks. including “outing the Democrats’ social media manager. ” and claiming that she’s childless and unmarried—even though. Phillip added. she’s “apparently engaged.” Phillip also said Miller’s online conduct has been aimed at liberals in a way that goes beyond mere disagreement.

“In just the past few months, she’s suggested that liberal men aren’t attractive. She’s called liberalism a disease. She’s used the R-word to refer to Gov. Gavin Newsom,” Phillip said, adding that it was only “a few of the many insults.”

Phillip then anchored her rebuttal in Miller’s own posts. including an X post from last month in which Katie Miller wrote that liberal men “aren’t attractive.” She also highlighted that Miller shared an apparent poll indicating that 60% of “extremely liberal men” between 35 and 45 years old are childless—a point that. in Phillip’s telling. set off a response from Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.). Thanedar, Phillip noted, “dunk[ed] on her with a photo of Stephen Miller.”.

The confrontation sharpened further when Phillip moved from the specifics of the insult to the broader question of who has used more severe rhetoric. Phillip dismissed outcries from MAGA voices like Katie Miller. saying Trump Republicans have “openly insulted their political opponents with far worse rhetoric.” To illustrate that claim. she quoted examples from White House communications director Steven Cheung. including posts in which he used the R-word to insult lawmakers.

Phillip’s core question landed like a challenge rather than a critique: “I mean. this is a person who works in the government. He travels with the president. He tweets from official accounts. So I don’t know. How are you comparing saying someone’s husband is ugly to, you know, violence in politics?. It just doesn’t make any sense.”.

  1. Katie Miller calling it “violent rhetoric” just because the DNC said something nasty is crazy. Like they’re both throwing insults and acting shocked it’s ugly.

  2. Abby Phillip keep saying “glass house” but I don’t even get why they’re making it about personal stuff. If someone says “shut up you ugly” that’s not gonna magically lead to assassinations… right? Also Stephen Miller is literally in the White House so of course it’s gonna be heated.

  3. This is just cable news doing the usual “we’re offended but also let’s reenact it” thing. They mention James Talarico and transgender stuff like it’s relevant to a comment on X?? And then they’re talking about James Butler dinner? Wait Butler is the shooter place or the one near Trump? I’m lost. But honestly I’ve seen worse on Twitter than “ugly fuck” and nobody gets “violent” from it, they just move on.
