ZRU Threatens Lady Sables Following Allowance Dispute

The Zimbabwe Rugby Union faces backlash after allegedly threatening Lady Sables players with bans following complaints over poor allowances and kit retrieval policies.
Tensions have reached a breaking point within the Zimbabwe women’s national rugby team as the Zimbabwe Rugby Union reportedly threatens players with career-ending bans following grievances over team compensation.
The Lady Sables returned from their week-long Rugby Africa Women’s Cup campaign in Ivory Coast to find their efforts rewarded with a payment of only US$150 per player.
This incident highlights a growing crisis in player relations where the prioritization of financial cost-cutting measures is actively undermining the morale and professional dignity of national athletes.
Beyond the limited pay, players reported an ultimatum issued by union leadership requiring them to surrender their national team tracksuits before receiving their allowance.. Several athletes described the process as an unsettling condition for receiving their payment, sparking accusations of intimidation against the governing body.
According to reports gathered by Misryoum, the union president allegedly framed national team representation as a volunteer activity.. Players were further warned that speaking out on social media would jeopardize potential sponsorships and lead to immediate disciplinary action or expulsion from the sport.
Financial frustrations appear to have plagued the team even before their departure for Ivory Coast.. It has emerged that the newly appointed head coach, Nsikelelo Sibanda, was unable to travel with the squad because the union failed to meet his financial requirements, leaving the team to compete under assistant leadership.
Furthermore, players claim they were forced to cover personal costs for their own green blazers, with promises of reimbursement remaining unfulfilled by the union officials. As of now, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union has declined to address the growing controversy or the specific claims made by the squad.
This standoff raises critical questions about the sustainability of women’s rugby development in the country, suggesting that a lack of transparency and support structures may be driving top talent away from the sport.
